  1. Tour de Shared Files This PowerPoint will give you a quick tour of most of the files on Shared Files – Math Department

  2. This is Shared Files: Math Department I will try to give you an idea of what is available. Over the course of many years I developed lessons that hopefully give students opportunities to explore, be challenged and learn using technology.

  3. This folder contains a collection of computer lab lessons(8) that were used in the double blocked Algebra class obviously in 2007. I tried to get into the lab about once every two weeks. Some sample activities are strewn around this page. Not all are computer based. The Algebra Balance Scales is one of my favorite tools to illustrate solving equations. It is the computer version of Hands-On Math. This is on next slide.

  5. A sample of the lessons: This one uses Slope-Slider from Shodor. Students are given a hard copy to record their answers but also have access to the computer version in order to click on links. (I see one on the first question – Blue Slider appears only if using Standard Form.)

  6. Still in Algebra Lab 2007 you will see a folder of Folder Evaluations. Each week students had their folder checked according to certain criteria. These are totally useless to you unless you can glean some ideas for evaluation. I do advocate the folder notion to encourage organization for the student.

  7. Not much in this folder. Nice activity using Gizmos on Complex Numbers

  8. Several of these are links that were found by calculus students. Some good – some not so. Not sure why this is in the Calculus Folder. This is a great activity for all classes. Not sure if EHS still has a subscription but worth using! Nice visual dynamic app for the classic maximum volume problem.

  9. Not folders I created - If you are willing you could allow use of cell phone cameras to complete this activity. Good algebra activity – show how equations can be developed from situations.

  10. This folder contains materials I used for a very short(15 min.) demonstration on clickers(CPS – Classroom Performance System) There is a document that explains how to transfer your class list from TAC into the CPS system to assign clicker numbers to the students. These are two incredibly powerful math programs that can not be run on the network. But if you copy them to a jump drive – you may be able to run them on your computer at home. Derive – a Mathematica type program Gyro – a dynamic 3-D graphing program great for solids of revolution. Not a folder I created – Guess who did!

  11. Foldables I have made – some are in a form that can be printed as a start to making a foldable. Others are just pictures to get the idea of what a foldable might look like. See Coach Newsletter #5 for a lengthier description. This folder contains only two PowerPoints – one is a book PowerPoint and the other is my Agendas for the year 2008-2009. Not too interesting unless you teach Honors Geometry – and not even necessarily then. My Fraction Flowchart method for learning to A,S,M,D fractions is scanned in this folder. The PowerPoint is a computer version of the flowchart for Multiplying and Dividing Fractions. The overall intent of the flowcharts is to brainwash or brain imprint the process. Also in the folder are flowcharts on Rounding Numbers and Playing Craps.

  12. These folders contain the Computer Lab Experience worksheets. I believe they are good opportunities for students to learn in another way from the traditional classroom setting. I would be glad to help modify and update these. Although they are mostly geometry in content. Similar activities can be developed for any subject. Geometer’s Sketchpad illustration of special segments/lines in a triangle. }

  13. } This folder contains two PowerPoint presentations that students created as review for their Chapter Test. Each student or small group created a slide on a particular topic. I would rate it as moderately successful. This folder contains an example of a cut and paste proof by me of the midline of triangle using PowerPoint animation. It also has student solutions from 4 years. I consider this an essential process for Honors Geometry students. An option to allow students to somewhat direct their own learning, projects can be quite valuable if monitored carefully. I required students to have a product and to make a presentation. Projects are contained from four years in these folders.

  14. This folder contains Exploration Guides that have been modified for student use. I have done most of these and the modification doesn’t take long. Gizmos is one of the most friendly and significant applications I have used. I highly recommend them. EHS has several GPS units that can be used for activities that directly relate to math concepts. They can be fun, get the students outside and will help teach high level math notions – even polar coordinates!!!

  15. This folder contains Jeopardy files used with some math classes – It is a pretty good program using PowerPoint. HOWEVER – since we have had the CPS Clickers System – I have used the program on it to play this kind of game. } Not sure why there are two folders for this activity – likely not much different in the files….This is a good activity for the understanding of linear equations from real data. LOGO – one of my favorite programs for programming and learning geometric principles. Takes awhile to get into it…but with some help sheets and bold students this program is the basis of some powerful math. Search for PC LOGO to find program- not listed under MATH.

The Math Curse is a book that I read to each of my classes early in the semester – it has a great lesson to teach – I reworked it into a PowerPoint since it was difficult to show everyone from the book. I do have the book if you would like the original. A nice list of strategies for math – not sure who created it – but worthwhile! Pi Day, March 14…..3-14….we have done a lot, a little and nothing here at EHS…this folder contains many resource links….and remember it is also Einstein’s birthday!!!! Similar to the Geometry Labs in other folders – these lab activities were intended for Pre-Algebra students – although they certainly could be used in current algebra class. } Various items from a Pre-Calculus class…not much – some student PowerPoints on Vectors. One is a form I used with students practicing for the ACT. Each day students would do a few problems as a warm up for the class. Shodor can be downloaded or run from a CD. It has some really good math apps – navigate to http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/ Similarity – Student generated PowerPoint on Similarity and Proportions – pretty well made!!!

  18. } First Start Geometer’s Sketchpad then you will be open these activities. Great resource – essential for use with Geometry students!!!! } Some evaluation forms I created to have students explore online resources. Student of the Month was a program we ran for four years until the Math Department was exploded. It was well received and promoted student achievement. This folder contains class materials created by a former teacher, Ms. Tate.
