Before the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) – Life at the Health Department • No resources specifically dedicated to infection prevention • Local health department staff built local relationships • Investigation of outbreaks • Consultation on reportable disease, infection prevention issues

  6. Activity A: Build Program Capacity and Partnerships

Activity B: Enhance Surveillance • Focused on acute care facilities initially • Needs assessment • Validated central line-associated bloodstream data collected in CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) • Piloted surgical site infection (SSI) surveillance through NHSN • 18 facilities, three procedures (none chosen by CMS! ) • Moved into long-term care (LTC) in 2010 • Needs assessment • Piloted surveillance for urinary tract infections with nursing homes participating in prevention collaborative

Activity C: Collaborate, Communicate, and Educate Education: • Assisted living facility and nursing home staff • Local health department staff • Inspectors from VDH Office of Licensure and Certification, Department of Social Services • CLABSI audit project webinar Collaboratives: • Data presentation (acute care) • Urinary tract infections (nursing homes)

  9. After the LTC Training • Increase in calls/e-mails to the HAI Team • MDROs, isolation precautions, environmental cleaning, C. difficile • Continued emphasis on connecting providers with local health dept contacts • Toolkit dissemination • Revisions, additions of documents

HAI Activities by the Numbers • 17 newsletters written • 2,000 toolkits produced • >550 people trained on toolkit materials and basic infection prevention strategies • 11 trainings, including one for inspectors • 319 positive blood cultures and 37 hospitals audited • 12 nursing homes in UTI collaborative • 18 hospitals in SSI pilot/acute care collaborative
