  4. Helpful Closing Skills • Clarification of purpose in ending the group. * don’t bring up new business * prevention of “bomb dropping” • Cutting off and redirection • Linking people and themes • Drawing out silent members.

  5. Other Issues in Closing Group: • “Wishes” • Handling criticism of the session. • Acknowledging new members. • Acknowledging losing members. • Requires thought and planning. • Allow for 5 minutes for every hour to close session.

  12. Signs of Unresolved Grief: • Depression/Withdrawal • Acting Out (i.e. attendance, hostility, etc.) • Relapse (reoccurrence of symptoms) • Psychosomatic complaints • Anger over “abandonment”

  13. Dealing with Grief • People grieve differently (no one correct way) • Examination of past grief issues • Grief is circular versus linear • Permission to grieve • Validation of all feelings (empathy) • Rituals to bring closure

  14. Exercises in Ending the Group • Having members write about their experiences and then share with the group • Making the rounds regarding feelings and review of what group has meant to that person • Wishes/Hopes • Reunion fantasy
