  2. Antigua http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrMkEO0-PyQ

  3. Antigua: History • Explored by Columbus in 1493 • Colonized by Great Britain in 1632 • Consists of Antigua and Barbuda • Partial independence came in 1967, with self-government on internal affairs • Full independence with full power of external relations came in 1981 • A constitutional monarchy – like Canada, the head of state is Queen Elizabeth II

  4. The Bird Family • A political dynasty • Ruled over Antigua since the 1940s • V.C. Bird was the country’s first prime minister • Encouraged tourism and banking industries • Corruption was a large issue • Money laundering, drug trafficking and arms smuggling were major concerns • PM Lester Bird’s brother convicted in 2000 for cocaine smuggling • Bird family defeated in elections of 2004

  5. Jamaica Kincaid • Born 1949 as Elaine Richardson • Completed education under British system in Antigua • Moved as au pair to New York City at age 16 • Later worked at Forbes magazine and the New Yorker • Changed her name as family didn’t approve of writing as a career • Interesting fact: she converted to Judaism

  6. Quotations by Jamaica Kincaid • "I'm someone who writes to save her life," Kincaid says, "I mean, I can't imagine what I would do if I didn't write. I would be dead or I would be in jail because -- what else could I do? I can't really do anything but write.” • She recently suggested banning US church groups in Haiti • Felt that they would impose Christianity while giving earthquake aid • Big controversy!
