  2. Organization Summary Students activists New Left Founded officially in Port Huron Michigan Grew in numbers because its emphasis on a wide range of issues Participated in many protest : Free Speech and late on Anti-war protests. March on Washington 1965 Focus on University reforms

  3. Membership June 1962 – Started with 60 students 1964 – 27 university chapters 1200 members 1965 – Membership triples April 1965 March on Washington 1968 – 30,000 members from 300 colleges 1969 – over 100,000 registered members - Along with registered members , thousands of non registered members supported the cause of SDS.

  4. Whyshouldwe care? • Focused on wide range of the era’s issues • Attracted a wide array of supporters • Helped start future student protests • Important part of anti-war movement
