Current relationship with UF • There is a Cooperative Agreement with UADY in place at present • Anthropology (Reciprocal Agreement) • Architecture (May have moved to Guadalajara) • UF does not currently have a reciprocal agreement with the College of Veterinary Medicine but rumors are that this is in the works.

  4. Current relationship with UF cont. • Current Cooperative Agreement with UF would cover a Spring Break exchange. • If we wanted to develop a relationship that would allow doctoral and other students to come for longer periods of time, we would need a Reciprocal Agreement. • Lynn Frazier would be happy to come and work with us on the agreement.

  6. Day 1 • Orientation to the bachelor’s program • Orientation to the Vision and Strategic Plan of the Faculty of the School of Nursing • Tour of the school of Nursing facilities • Classrooms • Skills lab • Computer facilities • Library • Trip to Progresso (North Coast)

  8. BSN Program (licenciatura) • First accredited in 1998 • Accredited by COMACE and evaluated by CIEES-SEP • Changed to a more flexible program in 2002-2003 (similar to UF’s system)

  9. BSN PROGRAM (LICENCIATURA) 2005 General characterisitics Once 391 credits are obtained the student caninitiate the social service year (5th year) Must be completed in order to graduate Other alternatives to be able to practice Exam Thesis GPA Written projects

Options for Licensure: BSN PROGRAM (LICENCIATURA) 2005 General characterisitics Individual or group thesis Individual monograph (research paper) A report or memoir about individual experiences during the practicum social welfare year’s work Average GPA (high enough, they pass) General exit exam for licensing, Optional additional course Enter into the Master’s or Doctoral program

BSN PROGRAM (L ICENCIATURA) 2005 General Characteristics professional focus: educator, clinician, administrator and investigator orientation towards self-care, sociocultural context, health promotion and prevention, and a holistic approach 8 semesters with a minimum of 3.5 years and maximum of 10 years depending on students’ capabilities

  12. MSN Program • Scheduled to start in Fall 2006 • Faculty has obtained their MSNs in other schools in Mexico (Universidad de Guanajuato and others)

Day 2 • Visit to Satellite campus of UADY • Nursing Satellite Campus • Education Satellite Campus • Computer Science Campus • Social Work Satellite • Unidad de Salud Tizimin (model for faculty practice) • Facultad de Medicina provides physician • Facultad de Enfermeria provides nursing and 5th year nursing students • All other services collaborate to provide services

  15. Day 2 • Orientation to the Unidad de Salud activities • Gloria de los Angeles Uicab Pool, Lcda. Nsg, MSN (preparing to enter doctoral program)

  17. Day 3 • Orientation to Research Activities • Lines of research: • Patricia Isolina del Socorro Gomez Aguilar, PhD in nursing:Models of nursing care (chronic diseases) • Elmy Lucelly Rodriguez Alonzo, MSN in Community Health (considering doctoral program): Maternal-child and geriatrics

  18. Lines of research • Nursing interventions that foster behavioral changes for healthy lifestyles • Nursing care for individuals with chronic diseases • Differences in health profiles and access to care (disparities)

  19. Doctoral Program • One faculty member has obtained doctoral degree through the consortium in Brazil (Universidad de Sao Paulo) • UADY’s program to be started in 2007 • Consortium of 4 universities • Central and southern Mexico

  20. Day 3 • Tour of the public hospital • Ambulatory services • Inpatient care units • Med-surg • OB • Pediatrics • Intensive Care Units • Mayan restaurant • Tour of Rehabilitation Center for Kids with special needs

Review of Recreational Activities • Ongoing activities • Sundays: Mexican music at Parque Hidalgo in front of Hotel Caribe (potential lodging site) • Mondays: Vaqueria with the Ayuntamiento Juvenil (children and adolescents doing traditional dances) • Tuesday: Rancheras in one of the theaters in Downtown area • Wednesday: Trios & Marimba music • There is also the possibility of a day trip on the weekend to Chichen Itza or Uzmal.

  23. Recommendations Immediate Goals: • Initiate coordination efforts associated with Spring Break 2007 Project • Develop goals for experience • Share information with nursing students • Develop criteria for selection of project participants • Identify costs associated with project participation

Recommendations cont. • Decide what our participation would be regarding longer • term exchanges with master’s and PhD students • Negotiate a Reciprocal Agreement to facilitate long-term • student and faculty exchanges • Sponsor a Sigma Theta Tau chapter at UADY. There • are a number of people who are members but they do • not have their own chapter. They are very interested • and from what they said they should be able to have • enough qualified people to charter a chapter.
