  3. Casus Belli(cause of war) • Rome and Carthage were two trading cities • Competed over trade routes and trade partners • So they fought

  4. Hannibal • Hannibal • Leading Carthigiangeneral • Planned to lead army of elephants over Alps into Roman Empire • Lost half of army but still enough to ravage Rome • Was lured back to Carthage by Scipio attacking Carthage

  5. Scipio • Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (full name) • General who finally defeated Hannibal • Lured him out of Roman territory by invading Carthage • Defeated Hannibal once and for all at battle of Zama

  6. Outcome • 1st Punic War- Rome won- got Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia • 2nd Punic War- Rome won- got Spain • 3rd Punic War- Rome won- got Africa and Carthage • After third Punic War, Rome razed Carthage to the ground, ending the Punic Wars
