3. Recent additions/developments • Entry Level • Certificate in Skills for Working Life - Land-based specialist units • Revised land-based specialist units at each entry level: Small Animal Care; Farm Livestock; Growing Plants; Floristry and Investigating Land & Environment

Recent additions/developments • Level 1 • BTEC Introductory Certificate and Diploma in Land and Environment • Vocational option units: Plants and Soil; Animal Husbandry; Land-based Machinery Operation; Floristry; Horse Husbandry; Riding Horses; Horticulture; Sport Fisheries; Customer Care in the Land-based Industries; The Environment; Water and Fish; Land and Environment Conservation; Practical Estate Skills; Moving Small Pet Animals and Caring for Small Animals

Recent additions/developments • Level 1 • Possible new Level 1 BTEC Introductory Certificate and Diploma in Vocational Studies? • Would allow a “mix and match” of vocational optional units within certain rules of combination • BTEC Introductory Certificates (180 glh) are equivalent to 2 x GCSE (D-G) • BTEC Introductory Diplomas (360 glh) are equivalent to 4 x GCSE (D-G)

Recent additions/developments • BTEC First Certificates (180 glh) are equivalent to 2 x GCSE (A-C) • BTEC First Diplomas (360 glh) are equivalent to 4 x GCSE (A-C) • Possible new Level 2 BTEC First Certificate and Diploma in Vocational Studies? • Would allow a “mix and match” of vocational optional units within certain rules of combination • Professional Development and Training events planned for September 2006 and March 2007

Recent additions/developments • Level 3 • Currently redeveloping all of the BTEC Nationals for first teaching from September 2007 • Approximately 250 units • Existing 87 different land-based qualification titles will be reduced to 30 – each sector will have a nested National Award, Certificate and Diploma • BTEC Nationals now attract UCAS points

Recent additions/developments • Schools should consider partnerships with relevant land-based or FE colleges • Resource (physical and financial), expertise and industrial contact issues • Must ensure that: • animal welfare is not compromised • health and safety is not compromised • environmental considerations are taken into account • relevant legislation and codes of practice are followed
