Introduction to Peter’s Conclusion • A good conclusion summarizes the argument you’ve made and reminds the reader of what you said, demonstrating that the evidence you presented agrees with your thesis. • If the ending of 1 Peter is a good conclusion, then the ideas we find there should be the same ideas we find in the rest of the book.

  13. 1 Peter and Ephesians have good conclusions • Neither the end of 1 Peter nor the end of Ephesians are introducing a new topic of Spiritual warfare. • Spiritual warfare is THE topic of both 1 Peter and Ephesians. • The goal of Spiritual warfare is to stand firm in our faith in Jesus through the devil’s attacks. • The method of spiritual warfare is to use all of the spiritual gifts from God in Jesus that are described in 1 Peter and Ephesians as the means of holding on to our faith in Jesus.

Is suffering for Jesus worth it? • 1 Peter 1:6 - Suffer grief in all kinds of trials. • 1 Peter 2:20 - Receive a beating. • 1 Peter 3:9 (4:14) - Insult you. • 1 Peter 3:13 - Harm you. • 1 Peter 3:17 - Suffer for doing good. • 1 Peter 4:1 - Suffer in your body. • 1 Peter 4:4 - Heap abuse on you for not sinning. • 1 Peter 4:12 - Suffer painful trials. • 1 Peter 4:13 - Participate in the suffering of Christ. • 1 Peter 4:16 - Suffer as a Christian. • 1 Peter 5:9 - The same kind of sufferings as your brothers throughout the world.

How do you suffer? • Do you ever get tired of not fitting in with the world because of your faith in Jesus? • Do you ever get tired of being humble and not fight back the way that the world fights? • Do you ever feel like you’re missing out on worldly pleasures and get mad at God since He doesn’t let you enjoy the pleasures of worldliness? • Do you ever even feel like Christian spirituality is missing something flashy that you might be able to find in another religion or even in a heretical form of Christianity? • In other words: Does it ever feel like it’s not worth the work of holding on to faith in Christ alone? • Peter doesn’t promise these struggles will go away until Jesus returns, but He says it’s worth it!

  17. 1 Peter Overview • From:Peter/the rock, apostle/messenger/ambassador/witness of Jesus, who learned the hard way in the Gospels what it’s like to be saved/set apart/selected by Jesus and to suffer/submit/serve for Jesus. • To:Mixed Jewish/Gentile churches, made of former Pagans and/or converts to Judaism in Asia Minor/Turkey, who as God’s people in Jesus don’t really fit in anywhere in their world anymore. • Problem:These Christians are facing temptations related to suffering for Jesus: • Persecution – Tempted to fear man: in either revenge or despair. • Prosperity – Tempted to go back: either to the sin of Paganism or to the legalism of Judaism. • Solution:The salvation from God we have in Jesus, really is gloriously good, and worth giving up everything for!
