  4. Rules for getting ready to Ride the bus: • Place all materials in your backpack. • Keep the backpack closed until you reach the school or home. • Always wear something bright. • Secure loose strings and objects. • Leave early enough

  5. Walking to and from the Bus Stop • Walk don’t run. • Walk with a friend. • Don’t litter. • After school go straight home. • Use the same route every day. • Don’t talk to strangers. • Don’t take pets with you to the bus stop. • Never accept a ride from someone. • Don’t play along the way. • Stop at all driveways and look for cars entering and leaving.

  6. Visual Screens • Block you from seeing the whole street. • Cars, trees, buildings • Make sure the driver can see you. Make eye contact. • Go to the edge of the visual screen and look (LEFT –RIGHT- LEFT)

  7. Walking along the Road • Stay on the sidewalk if one is available. • If there is no sidewalk, stay off of the road. • If you must walk on the road, stay as close to the edge of the roadway as possible. Also, walk single file facing the direction of traffic.

  8. Rules for waiting at the Bus Stop • Stand at least 6 feet back from the road. • In bad weather, stand even further back. • Don’t talk to strangers. • Don’t leave with anyone. • Don’t play games

Rules for Crossing to or from the Bus • Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop. • Be sure the red lights are flashing. • Be sure the swing arm is out. • Make eye contact with the bus driver. • Wait for the bus driver’s signal. • Look left – right – left. • Cross at least ten feet in front of the bus. • Don’t stop if you drop something, get on the bus and tell the driver.

Rules for Boarding the Bus • Stay 6 feet from the side of the bus until the door has been opened and the driver signals to board. • Line up single file. • Hold onto the hand rail as you step on the bus. • Be extra careful in bad weather. • Let small children board first. • Let children on crutches board first, help them with their backpack, books, etc.

  12. Rules for Riding the Bus. • Bus driver is in charge at all times. • Take a seat quietly and face forward. • Do not eat or drink. • Stay in your seat. (No standing or kneeling) • Keep all body parts inside the bus. • Keep items in your backpack. • Keep aisles clear. • Do not throw objects inside or out the windows. • Never bring pets, large objects, glass or sharp objects on the bus. • Ask permission to open the windows. • Do not distract the bus driver except in anemergency.

Rules for Leaving the Bus • Secure drawstrings and other objects • Remain in seat until the bus stops. • Get off the bus at your stop. • Leave the bus when directed by the driver. • Use the handrail. • Check to see if any cars are coming as you step off the bus. • Walk 6 feet away from the bus. • Don’t pick up dropped items that fall to the ground, tell the driver. • Never reach under the bus. • Go directly into the school or home after leaving the bus.

  16. Making anEmergencyExit • Remain in your seat until you are told to do otherwise by the driver. • Keepcalmand quiet. • Listen for directions. • Don’t take anything with you. • Don’tpushwhen exiting.

  17. Evacuation through the Rear Door • Hold loose clothing close to your body. • Sit or squat down in the doorway. • Take helper’s hand. • Jump to the ground – land with your knees bent. • Watch for traffic. • Move to a safe place away from the bus.

  18. Continue….. • Entire bus exits starting with the Rear to the front. • Right side closest to the exit leaves the bus first then the left side. • Alternate side to side.

  19. Evacuation through the front door • Hold the hand rail as you go down the steps. • Watch for traffic. • Move a safe place away from the bus. • Stay in a group.

  20. Continue… • Entire bus exits from the front to the back. • Right side closest to the exit leaves the bus first then the left side. • Alternate side to side.

  21. Incapacitated Driver • Emergency situation such as: • Fire, smoke, or accident leaving bus in dangerous situation: • Leave the bus quickly

  22. Incapacitated driver with no emergency situation • Turn off the ignition • Set the parking brake • Calm the younger students • Try the CB radio • Open the front or rear door to ventilate • Push on the horn • Wait for help • Stay on the bus.
