  1. Going Green Phil Burris

  2. Agenda Introduction MITC Infrastructure/DataCenter Current Status Future Goals Cascading Power Saving Strategies Challenges Additional Links

  3. Going Green Information Technology “Optimal use of information and communication technology (ICT) for managing the environmental sustainability of enterprise operations and the supply chain, as well as that of its products, services and resources, throughout their life cycles.“* * -As defined by Gartner • IT Approach: • •Balance of fiscal & environmental value

  4. Data Center “Darkroom” Infrastructure Power Availability& Distribution Internal & External Connectivity Compute Cycles Cooling & Heating Storage

  5. Today’s Green Initiatives • Policy of reuse or recycling for the disposal of all used servers, racks, printers and network equipment. Implementing Power6 CPU standards – technology for server consolidation and virtualization, delivers more energy efficient performance Using 12 blade chassis and virtual technology , thus using less power when idling than their predecessors Replacing CRAC units with a new more energy efficient models. Current units 15-20 year useful life Migrated to new disk technology that uses less power than preceeding models

  6. Future Green Initiatives Removing physical servers and implementing virtualized servers 76 less physical servers in the Data Center All new application servers are to use blade or virtual technology , If supported by application standards Replacing standard CRAC units with “in-row” or variable units Air Flow and Cooling Site Survey Implement 10 Cascading Power Saving Strategies: Every watt saved at the equipment level has a cascading effect upstream 1 watt saves approx. 2.84 watts total

  7. Cascading Power Saving Strategies: IT Hardware Low-power Processors High-efficiency Power Supplies Server Power Management Blade Servers Operational Best Practices Server Virtualization Power Distribution Architecture Implement Cooling Best Practices Power and Cooling Product Efficiencies Variable-capacity Cooling High-density Supplemental Coolant Monitoring and Optimization

  8. Challenges to Going Green • Difficult and expensive to retrofit an older existing Data Center from a facilities standpoint • Justifying the investment (Green is good but must provide balanced value) • Competing with other investments • Existing economic conditions • Capital constraints / Payback period • Operational lifecycles for existing equipment • Reliability of older technologies and difficulties of achieving the end on “end of life” projects • Software & System complexity sustains & extends hardware lifecycle & slows technology transitioning
