    1. History of the National FFA Organization

    2. What is the FFA? For more than 73 years, FFA has continued to be an integral part to classroom instruction by making classroom lessons come to life through realistic applications.

    3. Events Leading up to the FFA In 1917, vocational agriculture was established by the Smith-Hughes National Vocational Education Act. In the early 1920s, Virginia formed a Future Farmers club for boys in agriculture class. (Henry Groseclose) Word spread quickly resulting in the formation of similar clubs throughout the states.

    4. The National Organization In 1926, The American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City invited these organizations to participate in livestock judging contests. A group of these local clubs met at the Baltimore Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri in 1928, and chartered the Future Farmers of America. (Dues were 10 cents)

    5. The emblem 1929-National Blue and Corn Gold was adopted as the official colors 1930-E. M. Tiffany presented a creed and it was adopted by delegates at the national convention 1933-Blue corduroy jackets adopted as official dress

    6. NFA? New Farmers of America This was a similar organization that was comprised of African American vocational agriculture students and farm boys. The national organization was finally started in 1935 due to greatly in part to Dr. H.O. Sargent. (a white FFA official)

    7. Federal Recognition 1950 Federal Charter which gave the FFA unique federal support Public Law 740made FFA an intracurricular part of the agricultural education program

    8. The National Future Farmer was first issued (1952-first magazine) The U.S. Postal Service issued the first Commemorative FFA stamp

    9. Desegregation In 1965, the Future Farmers of America and the FFA merged. Women were allowed to join the FFA soon after in 1969.

    10. In 1988, the Future Farmers of America changed their name to the National FFA Organization This name was to help broaden the scope of the FFA from vocational education to science and leadership. The FFA magazine changed its name to FFA New Horizons. (1989)

    11. 1998-Dedication of the National FFA Center in Indianapolis, Indiana Dedication of the Agricultural Education National Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia 1999-First National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky

    12. The Lone Star State The Texas FFA Association was chartered in 1929. In 1994-95, the Texas FFA Association set a personal and national membership record of 60,672 members. The previous record was set in 1977-78 (60,832) Currently, Texas leads the nation with around 56,000 members.
