Addressing Challenges in Cylinder Filling and Standardization in the Middle East

This publication explores the significant challenges faced by cylinder fillers and providers in the Middle East. Key issues include the lack of clear responsibility for cylinder maintenance and recertification, inconsistencies in acetylene cylinder handling, and the use of non-standard adaptors. The MEGA Working Group focuses on educating users, promoting standardization, and encouraging the adoption of MEGA standards with local authorities. Our efforts also include the implementation of a harmonized color code and guidelines for cylinder recertification and valve standards, addressing the urgent need for national legislation and regulatory frameworks.

  3. Specific Challenge - Pool ( exchange) Cylinders • No clear responsibility for cylinder recertification • No clear responsibility for cylinder maintenance • Inconsistency in acetoning of acetylene cylinders • Use of non-standard adaptors

  4. Specific Challenge - Multiple Cylinder Standards • Cylinders may be made to various ( foreign) national or international specifications • Cylinder Valves may be made to various specifications • Inconsistency in use of Pressure Relief Devices ( PRDs)

  5. Specific Challenge – Absence of national legislation • No specific labelling requirements • No specific shipping or other regulatory requirements • No technical shipping regulations • No recertification regulations
