Chapter 2.1. Matter has observable properties. Properties – Characteristics that help us describe and identify matter. All matter has both Physical Properties Chemical Properties. Physical Properties. Property that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance.

Properties – Characteristics that help us describe and identify matter. • All matter has both • Physical Properties • Chemical Properties
Physical Properties • Property that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. • Ex) color, texture, size, density, volume, melting point, boiling point, and magnetism
Density • Amount of matter in a given volume of substance; how compact a substance is. • Density = mass Volume
Physical Change • A change in physical characteristics without forming a new substance.
Chemical Properties • Are what enable matter to change, in the presence of other substances, into a new substance with different properties. • Ex.)the ability to burn, reactivity to acid and to water
Four Ways Scientists Know a Chemical Change has occurred: Color change Powdery solid settles out of a liquid Formation of Bubbles; Gas is produced Change in Temperature – giving off heat or light Production of an Odor
