  3. What is DNA? • Deoxyribo-nucleic Acid • Mechanism for heredity • Contained in all living cells (except some viruses) • Macromolecule

  4. What does DNA look like? • Double helix • Sugar backbone • Nucleotide base pairs • Anti-parallel arrangement

  5. DNA Base Pairs • Two types • Purines • Adenine and Guanine • Pyrimidines • Cytosine and Thymine • Hydrogen bonded to each other (A-T and C-G)

  6. Three Special types of DNA • Mitochondrial DNA • Chloroplast DNA • Bacterial DNA

  7. Double helix in a ring structure Free in cell Open Contains only genes Double helix in a string structure Enclosed in nucleus Protected Contains genes and “junk DNA” Prokaryotic v. Eukaryotic
