  1. High-level gentamicin resistance in Enterococcus spp in Denmark • 159 invasive (mainly blood) enterococci collected between January 2004 and September 2004 (all; one isolate from each patient). The strains were collected at 6 Departments of Clinical Microbiology (Aalborg, Odense, Hvidovre, Herlev, Hillerød, and SSI) • All 159 strains were identified to species level by PCR. Susceptibility to gentamicin (128-2048 mg/l) was determined by the micro-broth dilution method. • Gentamicin resistant enterococci were investigated for the presence of the aac(6’)-Ie-aph(2’’)-Ia, aph(2'')-Ib, aph(2'')-Ic, and aph(2'')-Id genes by PCR (the 4 known genes for amg-R in enterococci).

  3. High-level gentamicin resistance in Enterococcus spp in Denmark • 62 HLGR E. faecium isolates had 53 different PFGE-types. Despite the many PFGE-types clones did occur; five of the isolates from one of the Danish Departments of Clinical Microbiology belonged to PFGE-type 41. Five other clones consisted of two isolates each. • Spread of HLGR in E. faecium isolates in Denmark seems to be due both to horizontal spread (probably by plasmids)and to less intense clonal spread of the aac(6’)-Ie-aph(2’’)-Ia gene.
