There Will Come Soft Rains There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;And frogs in the pools singing at night,And wild plum trees in trembling white;Robins will wear their feathery fire,Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;And not one will know of the war, not oneWill care at last when it is done.Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,If mankind perished utterly;And Spring herself, when she woke at dawnWould scarcely know that we were gone.   3. Simile • Compares two things with “like” or “as” • My brother acts like a monkey • My sister is as quiet as a mouse. • He looks as happy as a kid in a candy store. • She eats like a pig. • Non-examples: • My brother likes ice cream. • My sister looks like my mom.

  5. Metaphor • Compares two things without “like” or “as” • My grandmother’s letters are a time machine to her youth. • This small, isolated town is a prison, and very few escape. • My sister is the sun on a cloudy day.

  9. Personification • When an object is given human actions or feelings. • A breeze is whispering. • The kind moon smiles on us. • Sad tears want to escape my eye.

  10. Examples of Personification • Fear knocked on the door. Faithanswered. There was no one there. - Proverb • Earthfelt the wound; and Nature from her seat, Sighing, through all her works, gave signs of mourning. - John Milton • Snow speaks to the people, its falling above in the gloomy sunlight.   11. With which personification do you agree? Why? • An old house appears depressed. • An old house invites her guests to sit in simple comfort. • An old house hides all a family’s secrets behind her silent lips. • An old house smiles with memories of the past.

  15. Alliteration • When words in a sentence begin with the same consonant • Cold cream • Short shadow • Dan’s dog dove deep in the dam, drinking dirty water as he dove. • Mike’s microphone made much music. • Betty Botter bought some butter, but she said “This butter's bitter!”

  16. Create an alliteration to describe this picture (at least 3 words)

  18. Hyperbole • Exaggerates about a real trait • My uncle is as tall as a house. • He ran so far that he didn’t stop until he reached the moon. • He is so gentle that he would never even hurt a mosquito. • I bet an elephant is hiding under that pile of clothes on your bedroom floor.
