Objective • By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify extra and missing information when solving problems. • Standard 4MR1.1 - Analyze problems by identifying relationships, distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information, sequencing and prioritizing information, and observing patterns. • Standard 4AF1.1 - Use letters, boxes, or other symbols to stand for any number in simple expressions or equations (e.g., demonstrate an understanding and the use of the concept of a variable).

  3. Introduce • Kevin has 116 gems in his rock collection and 205 quartz crystals. • What is the total number of rocks in his rock collection? • Will the solution be an estimate or an exact answer? • Solve the problem.

  4. Teach • Natalie is making friendship bracelets to sell for $2 each. Last week, she sold 63 bracelets. Two weeks ago, she sold 21 bracelets. • How many more bracelets did Natalie sell last week than two weeks ago?

  5. Step 1 - Understand • Natalie is making friendship bracelets to sell for $2 each. Last week, she sold 63 bracelets. Two weeks ago, she sold 21 bracelets. How many more bracelets did Natalie sell last week than two weeks ago? • What facts do we know? • Trina sells bracelets for $2 each. • She sold 63 bracelets last week. • She sold 21 bracelets two weeks ago. • What do you need to find? • How many more bracelets Natalie sold last week than two weeks ago.

  6. Step 2 – Plan • Natalie is making friendship bracelets to sell for $2 each. Last week, she sold 63 bracelets. Two weeks ago, she sold 21 bracelets. How many more bracelets did Natalie sell last week than two weeks ago? • Once you find the information needed to solve the problem, you can write an equation. • Look for any extra information.

Step 3 - Solve • Which numbers are important to solve the problem? • What information is not important to solve the problem? • Subtract 21 from 63. • You do not need to know how much the bracelets cost. This is extra information. • 63 – 21 = n • 42 = n • So, Natalie sold 42 more bracelets last week than two weeks ago.

  8. Step 4 - Check • Natalie is making friendship bracelets to sell for $2 each. Last week, she sold 63 bracelets. Two weeks ago, she sold 21 bracelets. How many more bracelets did Natalie sell last week than two weeks ago? • Look back at the problem. Check the subtraction with addition. • Since 21 + 42 = 63, the answer is correct.

  9. Chance Tickets • Find any missing or extra information. Then solve if possible. • Chango the monkey eats four apples and three bananas for lunch everyday. He eats at 12:30 p.m. How much fruit does he eat for lunch in a week? • Nicole wants to buy a turkey sandwich, chips, and a bottle of water for lunch. She has $5.00 with her. Does she have enough?
