Possibly just 16,000 paid up members

  2. Tolpuddle Martyrs -Feb 1834 6 Farm Labourers tried to join GNCTU – Arrested – Tried Dorchester – Transported. George and James Loveless GNCTU declined and folded by August 1834 • Weaknesses • Organisation too large • Owen’s tactics – not militant • General Strike (Sacred Month) • Failed • Employers action – lock outs • Bosses lists of trouble makers GNCTU Trad view is that Trade Unionism had failed As workers moved efforts to other movements Eg. Short Time Committees and Chartism. But Trade Unionism among skilled workers did Make some headway.
