  2. Going Inside • 2500 BC- Harappan peoples created the first indoor toilet • The toilets, which do not flush, empty into a brick-lined sewer system

  3. Royal Flush • 1500 BC: Plumbers on the Greek island of Crete install the world's first flush toilet in the queen's bathroom • An earthquake destroys the royal house around 1400 AC. It will be many centuries before toilet technology rises to this level again.

  4. Really Public Bathrooms • 800 BC- In Rome, construction of the Cloaca Maxima takes place • Enormous sewer system that carries the city's waste to the Tiber River • 11,000 seats are lined up in rectangular rooms

  5. This Job is the Pits • Many Europeans are doing their business in out houses • Shacks positioned above deep holes • Man drowns in his own outhouse

  6. Heads Up • 1500- Many Europeans relieve themselves in a chamber pot • Throw it out the window shouting “Gardy-Loo!”

  7. A Charmin’ Idea • 1857: Joseph Gayetty intro[deuces] toilet paper • Prior to this people used whatever was available to them

  8. Bathroom Reading • 1672-Devoted readers can buy chamber pots that have places for books to be held.

  9. Stop Making Scents • 1775-Alexander Cummings creates the S-trap • Lets the poop go down, and keeps the smell down too

  10. Sculptured Seats • 1885-Thomas Twyford creates the first all-ceramic toilet • Many have them molded into interesting shapes

  11. Minding Your Business • 1999- Matsushita creates a toilet that is smarter than you are • World domination expected soon
