  5. Come in and sit. My name is Greg Cossette. This is physical science and room 206. Physical Science can be like a foreign language until you learn it

  6. Science can be the gateway to life, both living it and understanding it. My job is to facilitate your learning, in both science and life skills.

  7. What is Physical Science? • Physical Science is an encompassing term for the branches of natural science that study non-living systems, in contrast to the biological sciences. • It is the "fundamental science" because the other natural sciences (biology, chemistry, geology, etc.) deal with systems that obey the laws of physics. The physical laws of matter, energy and the forces of nature govern the interactions between particles (such as molecules, atoms, or subatomic particles).

  15. What’s the plan? • Each Monday • PowerPoint presentations: Take and hand in your notes • Finish the reading notes from the current chapter and hand in • Take home previous week’s packet for signature

  16. What’s the plan? • Each Tuesday • A pertinent lab or activity sheet to perform and hand in • Review Assignment to begin

  17. What’s the plan? • Each Wednesday • Complete the Review Assignment and correct it; hand in for a grade • Review Text and/or PPTs for Test on Thursday

  18. What’s the plan? • Each Thursday • Take the test on the chapter using notes from reading & PPTs • Re-test if below 60%; get the average score • Work on reading notes of next chapter

  19. What’s the plan? • Each 3-day weekend • Nothing to worry about if you are up-to-date and passing • Work on reading notes of next chapter if not finished on Thursday • Extra credit if you need it

  20. What’s the plan? • Each week • Progress Report • Reading notes, activity, review, and test in one completed packet • Parent signature on packet (for a grade)

Progress? • Each week’s work will be stapled together in a packet with your progress report. • The packet will be taken home on Monday and shared with your parent or guardian. • You will bring it back with a parent signature. • You will receive an additional grade for returning the signed packet.

  23. Classroom Activity • We read basic material from the text (and other trusted sources), expand upon it, and discuss it as we study each topic

  26. Getting credit for work • Written work is handed in using the correctly labeled in-box

  27. Notebook • Checked work is returned to the out-box in the back of the room for retrieval; keep it in a notebook for further use! You will use the weekly packets when you take your final exam

  28. Rules • Civilization functions because people observe certain common guidelines which enable them to share the earth and its bounty with the least friction and misunder-standing. Concepts that are in the best interest of all are laid out as guidelines for behavior. • Here are some that enable many people to inhabit this building and gain an education.

Teachers, too? • OK, so that was meant to be funny, but teachers in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s had to live with those rules if they wished to earn a living, regardless of how strict or outlandish the rules were. We all live with rules. • What rule would I like for all of us to follow as a behavioral guideline in this classroom? • It is found in all major civilizations and religions throughout history:

The Golden Rule • Treat thy neighbor as thyself. • Do unto others as you would have them do unto you • As you give, so shall you receive • Thy actions shall determine thy treatment • I do as you do • Be a friend to make a friend • You shall reap as you sow • We are as much alive as we keep the earth alive

My Expectations for You • Exceptional classroom behavior • Superior work habits • Above average grades at all times • Some disappointments (make them challenges, not problems) • Lower grades than usual ? • Questions – don’t settle for “what’s in the book” • Options • Work harder, increase time commitment • Ask for help

  37. Special Summer Instructions • EARN an hourly break. Tardy eliminates break. 10 minutes late = absent • Maximum of 2 absences for credit. See Mrs. Drewry about pre-arranging special situations • No hats, hoods, skateboards, or electronic devices!

  38. Special Summer Instructions • Relaxed dress code but no halter tops or swim suits • No food or drink (except water sippers) • No sleeping during class • We don’t have the normal support staff and so violations must be dealt with swiftly and strongly
