  1. UC Berkeley—Breaking Through the Language and Culture Barriers THE MACRLAB Presented by Team Global JiaHua Mai • Noe Lozano • Jose Mojica • Sara Safavihomami • Rich Manzana

  2. Agenda • Project Definition • Design Process • Personas, Constraints, and Goals • Design Solution • Top 3 Design Ideas • User Survey • Conclusion

  3. Project Definition • To build bridges among the best faculty, researchers, and students at Berkeley and the rest of the world through technology and innovation. At the same time aiming to maximize the appeal of the MacroLab globally, which in turn promotes the integration of people from all academic backgrounds with the hope of benefiting human society as a whole. 4. Design Process • Personas: Engineers and Scientists Bob Johnson (ME) Non-engineers or non-scientists Ida Dolatabady (Psychology) Faculty Ken Aragon International-Virtual-Person i_Person Project DefinitionDesign Process Design Solution User Survey Conclusion

  5. Design Process (continue) • Constraints • Budget-production cost: 1 million • Amount of space available: 1st floor -3rooms • Certain areas are restricted to the limited of space for use and time restriction, that is, may not be a 24hr operating room. • Access points, entrance/exit • Amount of time provided to the students to work. • Resources such as computers, chairs, and software. • Other countries may not have the required technology to communicate. Project DefinitionDesign Process Design Solution User Survey Conclusion

  6. Design Process (continue) Our mission is to provide an environment where students and faculty from all back- grounds can collaborate and share Ideas with their peers at Cal and around the world. Be able to create a pleasant environment where students are able to work freely with enough space and resources at their hands. Appealing and welcoming design at the cutting edge of modern technology. • Goals Project DefinitionDesign Process Design Solution User Survey Conclusion

  7. Design Solution Top Three Design Concepts • IDEA • International Multimedia Room 3. Room X Project DefinitionDesign Process Design Solution User Survey Conclusion

  8. Innovation, Design, Education, Action IDEA Room • Open Source Kiosk located in the middle of the room • Theoretical or Actual problem posted each month • Problem is posted via VB Bulletin Board. Login and Email required to keep track of people. Chat room w/ instant translators available for instant communication • For model problems robotic camera will be able to provide online viewing for users • Work desks available on 4 corners • Results from previous problems posted on the walls Project DefinitionDesign Process Design Solution User Survey Conclusion

  10. International Multimedia Room -A room where people can communicate with other people across the world and within the nation. The main purpose of this room is to communicate ideas efficiently through available technology and resources. The room will feature language translating tools from dictionaries to advance software. -Provide a Rich Experience by integrating high performance audio, video, and network technologies into a rich environment for instruction, conferencing, and collaboration in order to maximize the impact of education research not only within engineering but also within law, humanities and social science fields. Project DefinitionDesign Process Design Solution User Survey Conclusion

  11. International Multimedia Room Detail Prototype: • The design of the room will have a global theme. In the center of the floor there will be a design of the world. The walls will have international flags and finished projects to encourage motivation. • Flat screens on the wall displaying news worldwide. • A a clock displaying different times worldwide. • 2 conference rooms to optimize collaboration. • Video editing software and other tools. • One-on-One computer conference/work centers Essentially a map of the world that rotates within a ring which is marked by the 24 hours of the day. Each highlighted city on the map is connected to indicators which establish the international time zones. Project DefinitionDesign Process Design Solution User Survey Conclusion

  12. International Multimedia Room WebTalker: Record, playback, and publish. Quick way to put streaming audio on your web site. Google Talk: Free instant messaging and voice chat service. Babel Fish Translation(from Altavista) Systran: Developed under Linux and runs on all Unix platforms and Microsoft Windows. All Systran systems utilize one engine and use the latest Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies. Marratech: Software for collaborative web conferencing and multipoint video conferencing. Conferencing Experience Project: serves as an open research platform by providing a flexible, common framework for designing and implementing collaborative learning applications. Go Meet Now: Inexpensive and easy to use web conferencing service, compliant with restrictive firewalls. Share screens with multiple participants Project DefinitionDesign Process Design Solution User Survey Conclusion
