  2. 1. abiotic • A= without • Bio= life • Nonliving parts in an environment • Ex: rocks, water, air, salt

  3. 2. biotic • Bio= life • Living parts in an environment • Ex: plants, animals, bacteria

  4. 3. detritus • any disintegrated material; debris. • Ex: dead animals/plant materials

  5. 4.nocturnal • Noct= night • active at night • Ex: owls, foxes, raccoons, hamsters

  6. 5. diurnal • “daily” • active by day • Ex: certain birds and insects , humans

  7. 6. crepuscular • Becoming active at twilight or before sunrise, or dusk. • Ex: bats, certain insects (mosquito), birds, deer

  8. 7. aquatic • Aqua= water • Refers to water • Ex: aquarium

  9. 8. terrestrial • Terra= earth • an animal that lives on the land • Ex: extraterrestrial, terrain, terra cotta

  10. 9. habitat • is Latin for "it inhabits" • area that is lived in by a particular species • Ex: ocean, rainforest trees, bat cave

  11. 10. brackish • slightly salty; having a salty or briny flavor

  12. 11.salinity • Saline= salt • dissolved salt content of a body of water

  13. 12.adaptation • Any change in the structure or functioning of an organism that makes it better suited to its environment • Ex: structural (fins, wings) behavioral (echolocation)

  14. 13. saline • Saline= salt • salt • Ex: saline solution

  15. 14. Seining net • large fishing net that hangs vertically in the water by attaching weights along the bottom edge and floats along the top

  19. 18. Estuary • Aestus= Latin for tide • places where rivers meet the sea • They are made up of brackish water. • Nursery ground for many animals

  20. 19. Point source pollution • single identifiable localized source of air, water, thermal, noise or lightpollution. • Ex: smoke stack, street light ,wastewater, jet engine noise

  21. 20. Non-point pollution • water from rainfall and snowmelt flows through the landscape, carrying contaminants from many different sources. • Ex: farming pesticides, fertilizers on golf courses, landscaping, pools
