Chapter 9 Quadratic Functions and Equations
Pg. 546 – 552 Obj: Learn how to graph quadratic functions. Content Standards: F.IF.7.a, A.CED.2, F.IF.4, F.IF.5, and F.BF.3 9.1 Quadratic Graphs and Their Properties
Quadratic Function – a function that has a degree of two Standard form of a Quadratic Function – Quadratic Parent Function – the simplest quadratic function 9.1 Quadratic Graphs and Their Properties
Parabola – the graph of a quadratic function that is a U shaped curve Axis of symmetry – the line that divides the parabola into two matching halves – x=-b/2a Vertex – the highest or lowest point of a parabola Minimum – the lowest point – occurs if a>0 Maximum – the highest point – occurs if a<0 9.1 Quadratic Graphs and Their Properties
Graphing a Quadratic Function • Find the axis of symmetry – x=-b/2a • Substitute the value of x into the original function and solve for y – this is the vertex • Choose two x-values on one side of the axis of symmetry and substitute those values into the original function. Solve for y. • The previous step results in two points. Graph these points and the corresponding points on the other side of the axis of symmetry. • Draw a parabola containing all of the points. 9.1 Quadratic Graphs and Their Properties
