  2. Aesop • ancient Greek storyteller; lived around 550 BC • also a slave in the home of a wealthy Roman family • legend says Aesop’s master was so pleased with Aesop’s fables he granted Aesop his freedom

  3. Aesop • no records exist to show Aesop ever wrote anything down • fables were written down by others after his death • met with a violent death at the hands of the inhabitants of Delphi but reason is unknown

  4. His Fables • Fables: “short narratives that use animal characters with human features to convey folk wisdom and to help us understand human nature and human behavior” • specifically, use animals to portray human strengths and weaknesses and to pass down wisdom from one generation to the next

  5. His Fables • originally passed down through oral tradition and were eventually written down • Aesop’s fables have been linked to earlier beast tales from India and later written down by the Greeks and Romans
