  1. Rites – Form and Matter Rites in the Church • With baptism, confirmation, and holy Eucharist comes “full” membership in the Church. • The way these sacraments are celebrated may vary • The Church is composed of various Rites • Rite: is a common way of worship, and practicing the faith by a particular group of Catholics.

  2. Baptism Ministers of the Sacrament: • The ordinary minister of the Sacrament of Baptism is the priest. • In some cases a Deacon is called on to administer the sacrament out of necessity. • In the case of extreme emergency (life threatening) any person may baptize.

  3. The Matter of the Sacrament: • The matter used for a valid baptism must be pure natural water. Any liquid which can be regarded as no longer retaining the quality of water would not suffice. • The water must be in the liquid state and able to flow. • If the person receiving baptism is not being completely immersed (plunged) then the water is to be poured against the skin of the head and or forehead.

  4. The Form of the Sacrament: • The form of baptism consists of the words: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”These words must be said at the same time that the water is being poured and by the same person who pours it.
