  2. An immigrant is a person who has recently moved from one country to live in another country. It is not an appropriate way, to describe someone who has lived for many years in one country.

  3. Ethnic groups refer to any group with a shared culture. This term is interpreted and measured in many ways.

  4. Culture has been defined as “the complex whole which includes knowledge , beliefs, art , morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society”.It is shaped by education, the media, family and friends, economic development and the rules and regulations of the society in which we live.

  5. Race is used in a variety of ways to describe genetic differences in physical appearance, especially the color of skin and in a political sense as a way to bring people together to fight discrimination.

  6. Which parameters should be taken into consideration for an effective educational approach?

  7. Understanding the attitude of a cultural group towards a concrete and very frequent form of suffering, namely illness. This attitude is basically determined by its general world image.

  8. o Determine ways to accurately measure cultural/ethnic differences in self-management behaviors;o Determine the influence of particular cultural/ethnic group differences in diabetes self-management behaviors and outcomes (examples: variations in blood glucose testing, symptom management, healthy behaviors)

  9. o Evaluate interventions for minority children or adolescents that incorporate family, health care providers, school staff, support systems, and psychosocial factors;

  10. o Identify culture/ethnic-specific facilitators and barriers relevant to self-management across the lifespan;

  11. Investigate the influence of age, diet, education, environment, financial status, and physical activity in diabetes self-management in minority ethnic groups;

  12. o Investigate the efficacy of academic or health care provider agency collaborations with community-based organizations in the implementation of and adherence to self management protocols, as this relates to social support mechanisms, i.e., social capital. Social capital may be defined as social interactions that positively impact individuals/communities;
