  2. Kinetic Energy – energy due to the fact that matter is in Potential Energy – stored energy due to it’s position or shape http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=127812&title=Story_of_Kinetic_and_Potential_Energy KE = mx v2/2 or 1/2mv2 GPE = mx 9.8 xh m=mass (weight) v=velocity (speed) h=height above ground

  3. Elastic Potential Energy Energy that is stored due to being stretched or compressed is called elastic potential energy.

  4. Bellwork: Use the illustration below to answer the questions. x x x x x x • 1. ___ Which letter in the diagram represents the place where the cars on the roller coaster would have the most potential energy?  • 2. ___ Which letter represents the place where the cars would have the least kinetic energy? • 3. ___ Where in the diagram would the cars be moving with the greatest speed? • 1. ___ Which letter in the diagram represents the place where the cars on the roller coaster would have the most potential energy?  • 2. ___ Which letter represents the place where the cars would have the least kinetic energy? • 3. ___ Where in the diagram would the cars be moving with the greatest speed?

  5. Potential energy decreasesas Kinetic energy increases Kinetic energy slows asPotential energy gains Kinetic energy Maximumas it leaves hand.

  6. Seven forms of Energy: M Mechanical (Kinetic & Potential) R Radiant (Solar, Light-(electromagnetic)) S Sound C Chemical H Heat (Thermal) E Electrical N Nuclear (Fission (bonds break/nonsolar) & Fusion (bonds fuse/solar)

  7. Examples of Mechanical Energy

  8. Light energy Includes energy from gamma rays, xrays, ultraviolet rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwave and radio bands What is ElectromagneticEnergy?

  9. Energy caused by the movement of electrons Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy What is Electrical Energy?

  10. Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck. What is Chemical Energy?

  11. Examples of Chemical Energy

  12. Heat energy The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms are. A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement. What is Thermal Energy?

  13. Heat vs Temperature Heat and temperature are related to each other, but are different concepts. Heatis the total energy of molecular motion in a substance while temperature is a measure of the average energy of molecular motion in a substance. Heat energy depends on the speed of the particles, the number of particles (the size or mass), and the type of particles in an object. Temperature does not depend on the size or type of object. For example, the temperature of a small cup of water might be the same as the temperature of a large tub of water, but the tub of water has more heat because it has more water and thus more total thermal energy.

  14. If we take two objects which have the same temperature and bring them into contact, there will be no overall transfer of energy between them because the average energies of the particles in each object are the same. But if the temperature of one object is higher than that of the other object, there will be a transfer of energy from the hotter to the colder object until both objects reach the same temperature. Temperature isNOTenergy, but a measure of it. Heat is energy.

  15. The transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another through direct contact. The transfer of energy by the movement of a liquid or a gas. A transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves, such as visible light or infrared waves.

  16. QUIZ TIME! What type of energy cooks food in a microwave oven? ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY What type of energy is the spinning plate inside of a microwave oven? MECHANICAL ENERGY

  17. QUIZ TIME! Electrical energy is transported to your house through power lines. When you plug an electric fan to a power outlet, electrical energy is transform into what type of energy? MECHANICAL ENERGY

  18. QUIZ TIME! What energy transformation occurs when an electric lamp is turned on? ELECTRICAL ENERGY  ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY

  19. What types of energy are shown below? Mechanical and Thermal Energy (Don’t forget friction)

  20. What type of energy is shown below? Chemical Energy

  21. What types of energy are shown below? Electrical, Mechanical and Electromagnetic Energy

  22. What type of energy is shown below? Chemical Energy (yummy)

  23. What type of energy is shown below? Thermal Energy

  24. Draw a flow map showing the flow of energy transformations in a car from starting vehicle to driving. You should have 5 different types of energy.

  25. Energy Transfer Sound (mechanical) Electrical Thermal Mechanical Electrical Chemical Electrical Light (Electromagnetic)
