Vocabulary • Fraction – A number in the form , where b ≠ 0. • Mixed Number – A number that contains both a whole number greater than 0 and a fraction. • Equivalent Fractions – Fractions that name the same amount or part. • Unlike Fractions – Fractions with different denominators. • Least Common Denominator (LCD) – The least common multiple (LCM) of two or more denominators.

  3. Skills – Retaining Mixed Numbers • Least Common Denominator (Retaining Mixed Number) • Find a least common denominator for 12 and 3 • LCD is 12 • Write equivalent mixed numbers with the LCD. and • Add the fractions • and then the whole numbers. 7 + 3 = 10 • Simplify (if required) the mixed number

  4. Skills – Retaining Mixed Numbers • Least Common Denominator (Retaining Mixed Number) • Find a least common denominator for 4 and 6 • LCD is 12 • Write equivalent mixed numbers with the LCD and • Subtract (Add) the fractions • and then the whole numbers. 3 – 1 = 2. • Simplify (if required) the mixed number.

  5. Homework • (L5-8) Add and Subtract with Unlike Denominators, pp. 246 – 249 • Homework - Online Quia Other Quizzes, MSM6 Lesson 5-8, Add and Subtract with Unlike Denominators, problems 1-6. • OR • Homework – Textbook, Practice and Problem Solving, p. 248, problems 12, 16, 22, 24, 28, and 30.
