  3. Introduction • We are planning a trip from Singapore to Zagreb, Croatia for a family of 2 adults and 2 children with a budget of SGD$10 000 . This $10 000 will include the air fare, accommodation, food, shopping, entrance fees and tips.

History • Croats and other Slavs settled on the east coast of Adriatic Sea and the Pannonain lands in the early 7th century, forming two principalities, Dalmatia and Pannonia. • In 1102, Croatia entered into a personal union with the Kingdom of Hungary. • In 1991, Croatia proclaimed independence after holding the first democratic elections in the country. • Croatia was recognised on 15 January 1992 by the European Union and the United nations. The first country to recognise Croatia was Iceland on 19 December 1991.

Cultures and Festivals Radar Festival: • Many different foods are found in Croatia because its varied climate and landscape and the cuisine is influenced by that of neighbouring countries. • Croatia has many festivals such as Radar Festival, Zagrebfest, Zadarfest, Dora, Croatian Radio Festival and many more.

Places of Interest • Some places of interest in Croatia: • Dubrovnik – a city where the streets are made of glistening white marble. • Hvar Town – There’s a seaside promenade for a great afternoon stroll by the sea of Croatia, and the Croatian Island is a paradise for all who travel there. • Korcula Town – It is a filled with clay-top houses and is one of the most charming peninsula towns in Croatia.

Places of Interest • Rouvinj Town – an authentic fishing port of Croatia and Instrian in it’s nature. • Split City – The second-largest urban centre in Croatia, and the seat of Split-Dalmatia County. The city is situated on the shores of the Mediterranean, more specifically the eastern Adriatic Sea. Diocletian’s Palace sits at the Heart of Split, the city built by a Roman Emperor a few thousand years ago.

Sports and Partipation in the Olympic Games • The sports that Croatia participated in the Summer Olympic Games are: • Athletics • Basketball • Gymnastics • Handball • Rowing • Shooting • Swimming • Taekwondo • Tennis • Water Polo • Weightlifting Altogether, Croatia has won 17 medals (gold, silver, bronze) at the Summer Olympic Games since 1992. In 1992, they competed at the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain for the first time as an independent nation.

  15. Education • Primary education in Croatia starts at the age of six or seven and consists of eight grades. In 2007, a law was passed to increase free but not compulsory education until eighteen years of age. Compulsory education consists of eight grades ( Elementary School ) Secondary education is provided by gymnasiums and vocational schools. • Some schools in Croatia teach English in the first grade, but commonly, they are taught English in the fourth or fifth grade.

Education • Croatia has seven universities, the University of Zagreb, University of Split, University of Rijeka, University of Osijek, University of Zadar, University of Dubrovnik and the University of Pula. • The University of Zadar, the first University in Croatia, was founded in 1396 and remained active until 1807, when other institutions of higher education took over until the foundation of the renewed University of Zadar in 2002. • The University of Zagreb, founded in 1669, is the oldest continuously operating University in South-eastern Europe. There are also polytechnic higher education institutions.
