  2. A figure of speech is an expression that suggest unexpected similarities between unrelated things.

  3. Writers use figures of speech to help the reader to see things in new ways.

  4. A comparison of two unlike things using words such as like, as, than, or resembles is a simile.

  5. A person , place, thing or event that has meaning in itself but also stands for something beyond itself is a symbol.

  6. When we speak of a nonhuman thing as if it had human qualities, we are using personification.

  7. A metaphor in which a comparison is developed in a number of ways over several lines of writing or entire work is an extended metaphor.

  8. Metaphors and similes differ in that metaphors make connections without comparison words.

  9. An allusion is a reference in a literary work to well known characters, places or situations from other literary works, music, art, contemporary life, or history.

  10. Examples of Allusions Jane is no Scrooge. Jack is a Grinch. John realized coming to the dance brought him problems like a Trojan Horse. Shawn’s speech went down like the Titanic. Jerry, Ben and Al are the Three Stooges of the Class. The city square is the Mecca of social gatherings in Ocala. Fran is a regular Mother Teresa, she is always helping someone.

  11. A hyperbole is an obvious and intentional exaggeration.

  12. Examples of Hyperbole I had a ton of homework. I will weigh 50 pounds more after l eat this ice cream. Jack talked to me until my ears fell off. My dog is so ugly I have to pay people to pet him. My cat is so ugly fleas won’t live on him.

  13. Idiom Idiomatic expressions can not be understood from the literal meaning of their words. Instead, these colorful phrases must be translated.

  14. Idiomatic Expressions Amanda was on the last leg of her journey. It’s raining cats and dogs outside. Nan car is a real lemon. Jan has a green thumb when it comes to gardening. We all need to stick together. Sam finally coughed up the five dollars he owed me. Jim stuck his neck out for me.

  16. Alliteration Alice’s aunt ate apples and acorns around August. Becky’s beagle barked and bayed, becoming bothersome for Billy. Carries cat clawed her couch, creating chaos. Dan’s dog dove deep in the dam, drinking dirty water as he dove. Eric’s eagle eats eggs, enjoying each episode of eating. Fred’s friends fried Fritos for Friday’s food.

  17. Personification Personification is a figure of speech in which objects or nonhuman things are given human qualities.

  18. Personification My computer hates me. The camera loves me. Art is a jealous mistress. Wind yells while blowing. Opportunity knocked on the door. The sun greeted me this morning. Snow had wrapped a white blanket over the city. Time never waits for anyone. Trees were dancing with the wind.

  19. Similes Her hair is as soft as silk. His skin is tough as leather. Jill is sweet as honey. Karen’s cheeks are like roses. Jamie can run like a deer. Howard works like a dog. Ron can sing like a bird.

  20. Metaphors That car is a dinosaur. The stars were diamonds sparkling in the sky. Jon is a pig. Jim’s stomach is a bottomless pit. The fog was a blanket covering the valley floor. The wind was a beast. My mother is a shining star. He is a bear in the morning.
