  1. Welcome to Västerås Gliding Club

  2. Short introduction • Västerås Gliding Club is an average Swedish gliding club with about 90 members of which about 45 are active. • We are located at Johannisberg Airfield in Västerås (59°34.533’ N 16°30.216’ E) • Frequency is 123.65 MHz for the field after sector has been requested at Västerås Tower at freq. 130.60 MHz • The field has runway 05/23 with downwind always on the south-east side of it. • Fuel Avgas 100LL available. • We share with a motor plane club and a parachute club, which requires special attention to the safety directives.

  3. We are located in Västerås, which is approximately 100 km west of Stockholm

  4. In Västerås, the Johannisberg airfield is located at the west edge of the Västerås bay in Lake Mälaren.

  5. Or, more precisely, here…

  6. The town • 130’000 inhabitants • Industrial town once dominated by ABB • Fast trains to Stockholm (50 min) • Offers recreation: • Bath in Lake Mälaren • Canoe, sailing • Museum, cathedral • Nature reserves, golf

  7. You can see our airfield with asphalt runway 05, taxiway into club and Västerås town in the background The picture is taken south of the airfield facing north.

  9. Staying at our club • Club house has three rooms for rent • For special arrangements another two rooms can be organised • Camping is available with electricity and water • A youth hotel and public camping is within 1 km from the club • Café on the club • Restaurants within 10 min walk.

  11. Assembly room on 2nd floor

  12. Services at the club • Big kitchen with possibilities for cooking and storing food (stove, fridge & freezer). • Toilets & showers • Sauna • Huge assembly room • Own big workshop for glider repairs • Veranda for summer evenings

  13. Nice relaxation on the veranda

  14. Summer evenings in Sweden are looooong…

  15. Weather conditions • The weather in our region can show its absolute best sides during spring and early summer. Not unusual then with cloud bases above 2000 m with climb of >4 m/s. • In the late summer the weather is generally more reliable but more moderate due to high moisture. • The conditions allow gliding from beginning of April to end of September. • West-winds with cold air masses dominate the weather. • The visibility in the clear air is known to be very good in the north countries.

  16. Cross-country

  17. Cross-country • Västerås gliding club has direct access to one of the best areas in Sweden for cross-country performances. • Affected airspaces are well fitted with sectors with almost unlimited access (Borlänge, Västerås) • Good fields for landing out close to Västerås and at certain known locations in the used area. • The landscape is quite flat. Flying relies on thermals. • Sweden uses 123.50 MHz for gliders • FAI-triangles easy to define in the area.
