Future developments: Air quality in the Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS), dissemination of air quality information EIONET Air Quality Workshop 26 October 2006
Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) • Who: local, regional, national and international institutions are partners • What: environmental data in all thematic areas • Where: each partner makes available on the internet the data that they maintain
Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) • Users will be able to search for information from all partners • Users will be able to request data from any partner without making a copy • See two simple examples of working this way • Reporting Obligations Database (ROD) XML and Data Extraction Help • EEA Mapserver Help
Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) Partners must agree and then respect: • responsibilities • infrastructure • communication • content
Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) These agreements are already being developed in various processes. For example: • INSPIRE on spatial data at all levels • Data Centres at EU level • Revision of EU air quality legislation • At national level? – contact your NFP • ……
Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) • EEA will be responsible for the data centre on air • This data centre must provide the quality assured data at European level for: • air quality • emissions of air pollutants
EEA work programme 2007/2008 • Design and implement the data centre on air • This task will need: • the expertise of ETC Air and Climate Change • the support of National Reference Centres on air quality and air emissions • the cooperation of DG Environment, Eurostat and JRC
EEA work programme 2006 • Preparatory work on improving the dissemination of air quality data held in Airbase • Increasing the use of the data will facilitate the design of the data centre on air • Airview application is almost ten years old – it will be phased out in 2008 • Before - standalone software applications for dissemination in different thematic areas • Now – customise standard software applications within EEA Data Service
Draft results for tabular data • Download files to “take away” for: • Stations • Statistics for 2004 • Interactive queries for: • EoI statistics • EoI meta information • Still considering best way to handle information on: • Networks • Measurement data
Draft download files • Multiple formats provided: • ASCII Delimited • Microsoft Access 2000 • Microsoft Excel (depending on number of records) • Google Earth .kml (files containing coordinates)
Draft interactive queries Query results can be downloaded as .csv files
Try out the drafts in EEA Data Service • URL http://dataservice.eea.europa.eu/dataservice/metadetails.asp?id=949 • You will need your EIONET user name and password • Send your comments to sheila.cryan@eea.europa.eu
Next steps • Generating online maps from the statistics in Airbase • You can already explore station locations using the .kml file in Google Earth
But…. ….. the data centre on air is more than the current contents of Airbase • A great deal of other data also needs to be made available to users in an integrated way: • Zones in relation to air quality thresholds • Summer ozone reporting • Near real time data • AQ Plans and programmes • National Emission Ceilings (NEC) inventories • CLRTAP inventories • EPER reporting • IPPC reporting • Spatial modelling of air quality • Spatial modelling of air emissions • ……
