Towards a Packet Transport Network • SDH and its optical layer is the most widespread transport technology • TDM, circuit based • Carriers extended "smoothly" their circuit networks with packet transport capabilities • 802.3, ESCON, FC… interfaces for link connection • SDH next gen for packet services to circuit network adaptation • bridges features for any-to-any connections • Carriers have a large panel of transport solutions • current solutions : IP/MPLS, bridged Ethernet • new trend : provide tunneling… …with PBB-TE, PVT, T-MPLS… • Connection Oriented wave to "carry" Carrier Ethernet services • Similarly to circuit (SDH) and packet (MPLS) technologies

Introducing "Carrier Ethernet" • Terminology invented by the MEF to qualify Ethernet Services • E-Line (P2P EVC between 2 UNIs) • E-LAN (MP2MP EVC between >2 UNIs) • E-tree (P2MP EVC between root and spoke UNIs) • These services can be delivered over different types of networks (a.k.a "Transport network") • Native Ethernet based (802.1, 802.3) • Existing Packet transport networks (IP/MPLS) • Existing TDM transport networks (SDH-NG, OTN) • Misuse of language of "Carrier Ethernet" that drifted towards marketing connotations • People use to also include all technologies used to support Carrier Ethernet services • Carrier Ethernet certification program performed by Iometrix

  6. TIGER Consortium: Who are we? Fairly balance consortium • 1 major operator • 3 major equipment vendors • 2 SMEs involved in ICT business • 2 research institutes • 2 universities Orange – FT group

  7. TIGER Project Objectives • Propose solutions for a better coordination between IP and Ethernet technologies to address the Metro Ethernet growing market • Assess the benefits of the proposed solutions through Evaluation & Benchmarking studies with regard to existing technologies on the market

  8. TIGER Challenges Large number of proposals of Carrier Grade metro solutions on the market & in various standard bodies! Two major groups: Ethernet centric or IP/MPLS centric solutions PW/MPLS PVT/VLAN-XC Operators • Why do I need to change the legacy ? • Which one is the most adapted for my services? • How do i migrate towards the TIGER technology? MPLS Transport PBB-TE PBB Vendors • What should I develop? • What will be my differentiators ?

Goals of the Workshop • Bring together Experts of the different Carrier Ethernet services and transport technologies • Ethernet-centric: SPB, GELS, PBB-TE, etc. • MPLS-centric: PW/MPLS, MPLS transport • Starting from • Discuss various alternatives and confront them functionally • Provide performance benchmarking results obtained for these technologies • Open the floor for Scientific & Technical debate

Structure of the Workshop • Two tracks each divided into two sessions • Track 1: functional benchmarking • Two morning sessions (MI and MII) dedicated to functional benchmarking results per technology; • Track 2: performance benchmarking • The two afternoon sessions (Scientific and Technical Results AI and AII) dedicated to the performance benchmarking results per technology • - All sessions are organized 15/20 minutes presentation followed by 15 minutes of topical discussion - • After afternoon sessions, an open Scientific and Technical Debate (1 hour) will confront the scientific & technical results obtained by the workshop participants
