4. BTEC First Certificate • Equivalent to 2 passes at GCSE at grades A*-C. • Provide a more vocational, practical approach. • Good for students who prefer continual assessment rather than a final examination. • 100% coursework. • Not allowed to take more than 2 BTEC courses.

7. Plagiarism and Cheating • You can encourage your child to do well and provide them with access to resource materials. • You must not put pen to paper - you must not write the coursework! • You can discuss the project with them but you must not give direct advice on what they should or should not write.

8. Students can refer to research, quotations or evidence but they must list their sources. The sources could be anything – books, internet sites, television programmes. • Students must not plagiarise, copy or purchase essays or collude with anyone else. This is considered to be cheating and could lead to your son or daughter being disqualified.

11. The Courses • All students are studying AQA Science courses. • The majority are studying Science A this year and will move on to Additional Science in Year 11. A small group will study Additional Applied Science in Year 11. • Approximately 40% of the year are studying the 3 separate sciences over the 2 years.

12. Assessment • All students will sit 6 x 30min multiple choice tests during Year 10, 3 (Biology 1b, Chem 1a, Phys 1a) in November , 2 in March (Chem 1b, Phys 1b)and 1(Bio 1a) in June. • In addition there will be a Centre-assessed unit (25%) based on normal class practical work

21. Organisation of written coursework • Topics and precise timings set by class teachers. • Most of Year 10 lesson and homework spent on coursework • Students given a ‘top sheet’ for each unit which explains assessment objectives • Clear guidelines are given in class (task and title details, what needs covering, expected word count etc) • Interim deadlines for each unit are given by class teachers – a date by which first draft must be handed in and a subsequent date by which the final piece must be completed. • Final deadline: January 2011

22. What to watch out for • Students find it much more difficult to catch up once they have fallen behind • Plagiarism – guidelines for using secondary texts and internet sites must be adhered to. Guidance has been given and is on display in classrooms • One piece needs to be handwritten

27. SUMMARY OF ASSESSMENT Written Paper: (2 Hours) 40% of the total marks. Summer 2010 One paper with two sections: Section A A design question based on theme/context (supplied before the exam) Section B Covers all aspects of the specification content Coursework (approx 45 hours) 60% of the total marks. Summer 2011 A single design-and-make activity selected from a choice of set tasks. The development of a manufactured outcome and concise design folder

Food Technology “The fresh approach to the science, manufacturing, and handling of foods” • Identify how cultural issues have an influence on food products lifestyles. • Understand how sustainabliity impacts on the manufacture of food • Use drawing techniques & ICT to document information • Identify trends in existing products • Produce a detailed specification • Modelling/trialling techniques to aid product development • Use ICT/nutritional analysis • Record chosen design ideas
