  1. Tuning Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot Keith S. Anliker Department of Chemistry & Chemical BiologyIndiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot

  2. What is tuning? • a new “big idea” in higher education • European roots • learning focused • could be transformative • not perfect, but not scary • something worth considering • something worth making our own Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot

  3. What is tuning? • faculty-driven process • define and demystify degrees • focused on learning • data-driven quality improvement • enhance access, learning, success Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot

  4. Tuning USA (Chemistry Pilot) • participants from eight different institutions/campuses • IVY Tech, Vincennes, IU and Purdue • faculty got to know each other • produced a document • produced a lot of trust Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot

  5. Chemistry Subject Area Findings • introduction to the subject • degree descriptions • map of professions • role of chemistry in other degree programs/professions Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot

  6. Chemistry Subject Area Findings • generic competencies: a revelation • discipline-specific competencies • ACS criteria provided a foundation • additional starting points available from participants • lots of common ground • focus: AAS, AS, BA/BS degrees Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot

  7. Did we actually tune anything? • not really • no thorough vetting of competencies • did limited surveying of stakeholders • no changed practices or widespread availability of documents • meaningful exercise, proof of concept • It was a pilot! Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot

  8. How is tuning different than . . . ? • Institutional Accreditation (e.g. NCA) • Program Accreditation (e.g. ABET) • Prof. Society Standards (e.g. ACS) • the process • value-added transparency • allows comparison of degree programs in a variety of ways (common info) Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot

  9. Beyond Tuning • “transparency” and “demystifying” • possible tasks going forward • what prerequisite skills are needed? • what do students actually do? • a day in the life of a freshman, etc. • how are students evaluated? • what is research in this discipline? Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot

  10. Could you imagine . . . ? • web-based information (Tuning USA) • uniformly presented for all disciplines • resource for students and parents • resource for employers and others • web-based information (institutions) • connections to discipline information • how do our students learn and demonstrate competencies? Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot

  11. You are now tuned in to tuning. Questions? Comments? Let’s talk at lunch! Chemistry Reflections on the Tuning USA Indiana Pilot
