What is Sybase IQ ? • Sybase IQ is an optimized analytic server designed to deliver faster results. • What does it do? • It allows a business to search information in their data warehouse faster. • How is it better? • It can answer queries, create reports and search a database much faster than a traditional row based data storage especially with large amounts of data. • Reduces wait time from 20 min to a few sec or a min at the most.

  3. How Sybase IQ Started? • The program was developed by Sybase Incorporated team on Sun Microsystems hardware. • It took 10 years of engineering, specializing queries, etc. • Currently, it has 100 patents, 9 unique indexes and 6 different table joins • It already has 1500 clients

  4. Sybase IQ Target Market • Data Aggregators • Business with unpredictable queries • Business with centralized warehouses

  5. Functionality of Sybase IQ • How does it work? • Columns vs. Rows • Compresses size of database • 1 petabyte(1,000 Terabytes) of structured and Unstructured data. • Importance: • Large amounts of info take forever to access. Ideal for all business where speed is a necessity. (Finances/Stock Market) • Criticism: • Slows down writing data • Instead of just the last data object requiring updating one date object per data column must be updated.

  6. Row Based Data Most recent Data was input at the end. When running queries, the entire table would be searched in order to provide accurate results. Column Based Data While the process increases the amount of time required to insert data it makes up for it in query results. Update information in column rather than at the end of the data. Column Based vs. Row Based Data

  7. Entry Examples • Row Based Entry • 1, Smith, John, Accounting,45000; 2, Jones, Ann, Finance, 50000; 3, Brown, Joe, Marketing, 40000 • Column Based Entry • 1,2,3;Smith, John, Jones, Ann, Brown, Joe; Accounting, Finance, Marketing; 45000, 50000, 40000
