  1. S.M.A.R.T. Goals for the high school student

  2. S  SPECIFIC • What are you going to do? • Why is this important to do at this time? • What do you want to ultimately accomplish? • How are you going to do it?

  3. M  MEASURABLE • If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. • Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress. • Choose a goal with measurable progress so you can see change occur. • When you measure your progress you stay on track and reach your target dates.

  4. A ATTAINABLE • When you identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure out ways you can make them come true. • A goal needs to stretch you slightly so you feel you can do it and it will need a real commitment from you. • Goals which are set too far out of reach you probably won’t commit to doing.

  5. R REALISTIC • Realistic means “do-able”, not easy. • You have the skills and abilities to meet the goal. • A realistic project may push your skills and knowledge, but it should not break you. • Be sure to set goals that you can attain with some effort!

  6. T TIMELY • Set a timeframe for the goal. • Putting an end point on your goal gives you a clear target to work toward. • If you don’t set a time, the commitment is too vague. • Without a time limit, there’s no urgency to start taking action now!

  7. Step 1: Define Goals • List on a sheet of paper as many goals as you can. • These can be long term like owning your own business, or short term like becoming more organized. • Goals should be measurable, within your control, and specific enough to work toward.

  8. Step 2: Identify Obstacles • For each goal, list any thing that might prevent you from achieving that goal.

  9. Step 3: Create an Action Plan • For each goal, and its obstacle(s), decide how you might tackle that roadblock. • Break your goals down into small steps so they are realistic and attainable. • What resources can you use to help you meet them? • What support do you need to overcome those roadblocks?

  10. Step 4: Assign Target Dates • For each step in your action plan, set a target date to meet that step. • For long term goals, create a specific to-do list for the near-term so you can get started NOW!
