  2. All animals: • are multicellular (made of many cells) • can move • gets its food by eating other organisms (is a consumer) • responds to factors in their environment (e.g. light, temperature)

  3. Mammals • Mammals belong to a group of animals which have the following characteristics: • Vertebrates (they have a backbone) • Have a four chambered heart • Warm blooded (blood temperature is always kept the same) • covered with fur or hair • Females feed their young on milk

  4. Q: Can mammals lay eggs? A: Yes - they are called ‘monotremes’

  5. There are three groups of mammals Monotremes – lay eggs Marsupials – pouched animals Placental mammals – have placenta attached to the young via umbilical cord
