How to “talk the talk” • Workforce Development: a wide range of education, training, and employment services, including adult basic education, alternative high school, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and skills training • WIA= The Workforce Investment Act • ITA= Individual Training Account • WIA 1A= a low-income adult • WIA 1D= a dislocated worker • JTA=The Job Training Alliance • CBO=Community Based Organization

  3. How does a constituent access job training? Two ways: • The job seeker finds the training program through their own research • A job seeker goes to a one-stop career center for guidance with their search

An estimate of need of low-income workers • There are roughly 46,000 families receiving TANF in MA • There are over 500,000 individuals and households receiving SNAP in MA • 27% (108,222) of children in low-income MA families do not have an employed parent compared to 2% (15,739) of children in above low-income families. (http://www.nccp.org/profiles/MA_profile_6.html) • Over 93,000 Massachusetts workers currently earn at or near the minimum wage ($8.00/hour)

Results for Last Year for JTA Member Organizations • 3,162 - Number of low income and unemployed persons that received skills training • 88% - Percent of participants who completed their training • 84% - Percent of completers gaining employment after training • $13.50 - Average hourly wage earned aftertraining
