Enhancing Translation Efforts through the Translation Grid: Bridging Information and Digital Divides
The National Translation Grid aims to tackle the complex challenges posed by the information divide using advanced NLP techniques. By employing distributed computing, we can form a supercomputer-like network of translators to manage large-scale translations. The Korean Linux Document Project (KLDP) serves as a prime example, where volunteers are crucial for translating vital Linux documents into Korean. This project not only addresses language barriers but also promotes the standardization and acquisition of terminologies, ultimately bridging cultural and informational gaps in the digital realm.

Information Divide • Characteristics of Information Divide • Information Divide > Digital Divide • Digital Divide ; can be overcome, but • Information Divide is hard to defeat • Language Translation : high-cost human labor intensive job
Grid Project • Computation Grid • Distributed small computer make them a supercomputer • Translation Grid • Distributed translators perform the large scale of the translation
KLDP – Korean Linux Doc. Proj. • KLDP(Korean Linux Document Project) • http://kldp.org • They translate English Linux document into Korean • They are voluntering • Translation Process • Pick an article to translate at http://www.linuxdoc.org • Download DocBook sgml source code of the article • Announce the start of the translation to prevent the effort to do same work. • When they finish the translation, Email the result to cvs@kldp.org
Translation Company do not use IT Technologies • Tools in Use : Text Editors such as MS-Word, HWP, etc. • They do not utilize Glossaries well, even though they made them. • Translator’s softwares such as Trados and Transit are introduced but very expensive
Translation Portal • Anyone can join the project on the World Wide Web • Collaborates with Divide & Conquer strategy • Translation Grid • Support Translation Workflow • Draft(Machine Translation), Translation(Translation Expert), Review(Target Reader) • Provide Translation Memory Utility
Things to be expected • Standardization and Acquisition of Terminologies • Aligned Bilingual Corpus • Translation Memory • Breaking down the barrier to the information • Speed up getting foreign information
Fields to be applied first hands • Linux related documents • Localization of Open Source Software • Old Classics in Chinese letters • … • In the field that Public gain and cultural importance motivates the translators’ volunteering
Possibilities • Volunteers post the translation of CNN News on BBS and WWW • Active involvement of translators for KLDP(Korean Linux Document Project) • Individuals translate small portion of the document, but the whole document are being translated by the group.
Strategy and Effects • Support the KLDP’s activities • Provide them with translation portal • Set up the pilot service • After establishing the solid system, transfer the technology to translation companies • Maximize the public gains by minimize the information divide • Feed the translation companies with NLP technologies
