August 20, 2012 Enter room QUIETLY. HW: PARTS OF SPEECH QUIZ TOMORROW Read over “Rules and Procedures” Handout from last Thursday. On a sheet of paper, write down the 5 most important rules for you. I will take this up in 7 minutes.

Reader’s Notebook • Section #2: Books-to-Read List: Glue the handouts into your notebook in the correct order. List the book I suggested on your Reading Interest-A-Lyzerfrom last week.
Sample Entry • Glue in the sample entry. • Read the sample entry. • Imitate the sample entry when you write yours later on.

Poetry • Definition: shortened form of writing • Figurative Language: metaphors, similes, personification, alliteration • Author’s expression of feelings/emotions/opinions • May follow a form/structure: haiku, limerick, sonnet
Traditional Literature • Definition – stories that are passed down for generations by oral storytelling • Myths, legends, folk tales, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, tall tales • Foundation for fantasy
fantasy • Characters: talking animals, mythical creatures (dragons, minotaurs, vampires), magic users (wizards, witches) • Setting: often medieval (forests, castles, caves), time travel (magic) • Plot: hero’s journey/quest, often good vs. evil
Science Fiction • Characters: mutants, aliens, robots, mad scientists, talking computers • Setting: advanced technology/ futuristic cities, space ships, other worlds, time travel (technology) • Plot: alien attacks/visits, time travel, technology is important, experiments “gone wrong”
