  1. HS GameTime The Press-Enterprise’s high school sports initiative

  2. HSI .PE.com was a hit What do you remember most about 2006? A booming economy? At The Press-Enterprise, 2006 marked the debut of HSI.PE.com, our high school prep sports site. It was so popular dozens of newspapers across the country called us for tips to help them create their own sites.

  3. Then came 2007 Our parent company, Belo, loved HSI.PE.com so much, our site was used as a model for a corporate-wide high school sports Web initiative. Thus, HSGameTime.com was born. And, yes, with these colors.

  4. We’re still popular! Despite the name change and the color scheme, HSGameTime is thriving. In the first eight weeks of the 2010 season, we had 2.145 million page views, a 22 percent increase over 2009.

  5. A few more numbers… During the first eight weeks of the 2010 football season, we’ve had: * 1.05 million page views of stories, polls, schedules and statistics     * 500,000 page views of photos from games     * 250,000 page views of blogs * 50,000 views of videos

  6. Our coverage area We cover 90 high schools, 75 that play football. We have three FTEs dedicated to high school sports, plus two other staffers who devote half of their time to high school sports. Each Friday, we cover up to 13 games with staff writers and freelancers.

  7. Did you see us? Our new photo galleries have been very popular. We shoot 4-6 games per week, generating at least 20,000 page views per week.

  8. Video views are up more than 500 percent We shoot video of 6-8 games per week, showing the highlights on Friday night on “HSGameTime: Live.” The videos are then available on the site by midnight.

  9. Mobile app now available In September, we debuted our mobile app for smart phones. We’ve had more than 4,000 fans sign up in the first four weeks.

  10. Populate your site, and more, using the blog tool PE.com uses the MovableType blog format. We use the blog tool to populate: • More than 150 individual pages on three specific sports websites including 90 school-specific high school pages • Facebook pages • Twitter pages • Smart phone mobile app

  11. Blogging during games We publish live updates during games. It was an instant success, producing several thousand page views between 7 and 10:30 p.m. on Friday nights.

  12. Student bloggers This year, we’ve added student bloggers to supplement our school coverage. So far, we have 32 high school students blogging on anything that pertains to sports, cheerleading or bands at their schools.

  13. Fan pick ’em contest Readers can pick the winners each week.

  14. “HSGameTime: Live” We think our live scoreboard show is the only one of its kind in the country. Each Friday, beginning at 9 p.m., we broadcast scores, video highlights, give expert analysis and take viewer calls.

  15. Low-cost/no-cost web production • All you need is a Webcam and a computer ...  • ... and a free account on UStream.Tv, Justin.tv or Livestream.com  • Follow the simple instructions, embed the video and you're off and running. • These sites have powerful graphics programs, or low-cost solutions to mix in videos, graphics and other cameras.

  16. And then there’s print … We have a high school sports presence in the print edition six days per week.

  17. Preview day On Thursdays, we devote four pages to previewing the week’s big games, with statistics, standings, rankings and much more.

  18. Saturday On Saturdays, we devote the first six pages of our 12-16 page Sports Day section to HSGameTime.
