  1. Mustang MinuteSeptember 26, 2014 What does love at first sight mean? Where have you seen it before – in movies or in books? Do you think love at first exists or is it just “lust” at first sight? Does it have an age restriction? Do you believe in love at first sight? Why or why not? Can love at first sight be “real” or “lasting” love? Let’s Assign Parts: 8 people! • Lord Capulet • Capulet’s Cousin • Servingman (only has 1 line!) • Romeo • Tybalt • Juliet • Benvolio • Nurse • Find where the stage directions says… • “Enter Capulet and his household…” – You will be skipping the first 20ish lines. • Let’s begin with Lord Capulet… • “Welcome, gentleman. Ladies have their toes…”

  3. Let’s Dig in to Act 1 scene 5 (I.v) • Lines 1-47ish (STOP) • What is going on right now? Who is present in this scene so far? Where are they? What are they discussing?

  4. Let’s Dig in to Act 1 scene 5 (I.v) • Lines 48-60 (STOP) • Who do you suppose Romeo is talking about? Is it Rosaline? • How do we know it’s someone new? • Let’s look at these last few lines again (59-60) What can we conclude about Romeo’s feelings? Is he thinking with his head or his heart?

Let’s Dig in to Act 1 scene 5 (I.v) • Lines 61-103 (STOP) • What is the conflict in these lines? • What is Tybalt’s view of Romeo’s presence at the party? • What perspective does Capulet take? • How do you think age plays a role in these differing views? • Let’s reexamine Tybalt’s last few lines (100-103). What is Tybalt essentially saying here? • Why would this be a difficult situation for Tybalt to deal with?

  6. Let’s Dig in to Act 1 scene 5 (I.v) **REMEMBER: Sonnet = 14 line poem style with a strict rhyming and beat (meter) pattern. • Lines 104-122 (STOP) • Is Romeo a flirt? How? Does he use pick-up lines? • How does he try to convince Juliet to let him kiss her? What kind of “logic” does he use? • Romeo and Juliet’s lines here create a 14 line sonnet. • Why do you suppose Shakespeare would decide to write a love sonnet that is being written by two people?

Let’s Dig in to Act 1 scene 5 (I.v) • Let’s pick apart the religious imagery of this conversation? • What is a pilgrimage? • Who is the metaphorical “pilgrim” here? • Who is the metaphorical “holy saint” here? • How do these metaphors characterize the relationship between the two soon-to-be lovers? • Traditional sonnets contain an unworthy suitor and an idealized paragon (perfect example) of virtue. • Is Romeo the unworthy suitor to fit the tradition? How so? • Is Juliet the idealized example of virtue? How so? • How does this sonnet filled with religious imagery contrast with what’s actually happening in the scene? Sly dog!
