Effectiveness of Cooperative Learning Strategy on the Learning Outcomes of Students in Basic Science in Junior Secondary

The study investigated the effectiveness of cooperative learning strategy on students' achievement in Basic Science in Iwo Local Government Area of Osun State. It also determined the effect of the strategy on students' attitude towards the learning of Basic Science in Junior Secondary Schools and finally assessed the effect of the strategy on students gender on the learning outcomes of students in Basic Science. These were with a view to improving students' performance in the subject. The study employed the equivalent groups pretest, post test, control group, quasi experimental research design. The population for the study comprised all Junior Secondary School II students in Iwo Local Government Area of Osun State. Two schools were selected randomly using simple random sampling technique. From the selected schools, two intact classes of JSS II students were also randomly selected using simple random sampling technique. In all, sixty students were used for the study. Two instruments were used for data collection. They are Test of knowledge in Basic Science TKBS and Students' Attitude Questionnaire SAQ towards the learning of Basic Science. Data collected were analysed through mean, standard deviation and t test analysis. The results of the study showed a significant difference in the achievement of students exposed to cooperative learning and those taught with teacher expository method t=4.643 p 0.05 . Students in cooperative learning group performed better than those in teacher expository method. The results further revealed a significant difference in the attitude of students exposed to cooperative learning after the treatment t=41.04 p 0.05 and the results finally showed that gender has no effect on students' academic performance t=0.748 p 0.05 . The study concluded that cooperative learning strategy is a better and innovative method in improving students' academic performance in Basic Science. Implications of Wastage of Human Resources in Secondary Schools in Meme Division

This study titled "Implications of Wastage of Human Resources in Secondary Schools in Meme Division is based on the problem of educational wastage in school establishments. The general objective was to establish the relation between school human resources and wastage in secondary schools in Meme Division of the South west Region of Cameroon. One research question was posed to examine the issue under investigation. Being a quantitative study, the survey research design was used. The target population constituted 362 secondary school principals in the South west Region of Cameroon. A questionnaire on educational infrastructural inputs was used to collect data, and data obtained was analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviation. The Chi square test was used to test hypotheses at 0.5level of significance The Item intended to verify the relationship between qualified teachers and wastage. Analyses revealed that 5 schools always have qualified teachers, 23 schools sometimes have qualified teachers. It was also found that there is positive relationship between qualified teachers and wastage. As confirm by the result of hypothesis testing. Analyses shows that x2 calculated 16.08 x2 calculated value 7.93 . This means that when a school has qualified teachers, educational wastage can be reduce. When there is lack of qualified teachers, the rate of school repetition increases. This result agrees with the result of research Magnet 2007 that hold that student with certified teachers perform better than student with teachers who have no certification or emergency certificate. He also alerted that teachers, who have professional education training or pedagogy, produce higher student's achievement than those who enter the profession and lack this background. Item intended to verify the relationship between quantity and teachers at all the subjects and school repetition. Analyses revealed that 7 schools always have adequate quantity of teachers in all the subjects 21 schools, sometimes have adequate quality in all the subjects and 40 schools often have adequate quantity of teachers in all the subjects. It was also found that there is a positive relationship between enough quantity of teachers in all subjects and school repetition. As confirm by the result of table above shows that x2 calculated 13.69 x2 critical value 7.92 . This means that quantity of teachers in the entire subject can reduce the rate of repetition. Item intended to verify the relationship between teachers with experience and school repetition. Analyses revealed that 9 schools always have teachers with experience, 20 schools sometimes have teachers with experience, 36 schools often have teachers with experience. It was also found that there is positive relationship between teachers experience and school repetition. As confined by the result above .It shows that X2calculated l0.18u00c2u00bbX2 critical 7.92 value. This means that schools which have teachers with experience can have low rate of repetition, while schools which have teachers without experience can have high rate of school repetition. This result agree with magnet 2007 finding, who hold that there is a negative effect when a high proportion of inexperienced teachers are present in school, in terms of higher dropout rate and lower students achievement scores. Item intended to verify the relationship between support staff for discipline and school repletion. Analyses shows that, 10 schools always have support staff for discipline,15 schools sometimes have support staff for discipline, 40 schools often have support staff for discipline. It was found that there is a positive relationship between availability of support staff for discipline and school repetition. As confirmed by the result of table above. It reveals that X2 calculated 11.27 X2 critical value 7.92 . This means that the availability of support staff for discipline can reduce the rate of school repetition. Item intended to verify the relationship between availability of guidance and counseling and school repetition. Table above reveals that 71 schools often have staff for guidance and counseling. It was also found that there is no positive relationship between availability of staff for guidance and counseling and school repletion. As confined by the result of table 71. It shows X2 calculated 0.042 X2 critical value 7.92 this mean that the availability of staff for guidance and counseling does not influence the rate of repetition in school. Results from this study and those of other researches show that when human resources of standards are available in school, there will be low rate of educational wastage. On the other hand, if these resources are neglected or left out completely, there will be high rate of school wastages. It also reveals that human is still lacking in a higher percentage in schools. The Impact of School Facilities on Teaching and Learning in Presbyterian Secondary Schools in the SW of Cameroon

Considering that education is the bed rock of every successful society, this study intended to find out the impact of school facilities on teaching and learning in Presbyterian secondary schools in the south west region of Cameroon. This study used the survey research design which helped to determine the influence of facilities on teaching and learning in selected Presbyterian secondary schools in the South West Region of Cameroon. Data for the study was collected by the use of questionnaire which contained semi structured questions. The closed ended questions constituted Likert type four response option items. The secondary schools studied are located in three of the six Divisions of the Region. These are Fako, Meme and Manyu. Of the five secondary schools studied, two are in the urban area of Kumba Meme Division and Limbe Fako Division while three are located in rural areas. The target population for this study constituted all teachers found in Presbyterian Secondary Schools in the South West Region of Cameroon In this study the researcher used 05 Presbyterian Secondary Schools out of the 07 Presbyterian Secondary Schools in the South West Region of Cameroon. This sample size gave a percentage of 60 from the population giving a total number of representatives of 150. From the findings, it was realised that the indispensible role of school facilities was approved by almost all the respondents. About three quarters of them held that school facilities classrooms with good air conditions enhance teaching and learning, comfortable seats enable learning as students feel well to participate in class while spacious classrooms give the teacher and student good room for interaction. This agrees with the study of Buckley, et al., 2004 that poor air movement and ventilation can result in increased student absenteeism and subsequent reduced student performance thermal comfort affect both teacher performance and student achievement and classroom lighting can improve test scores and reduce off task behavior. Also, a study of over 2000 classrooms indicated that students with the most classroom daylight progressed 20 faster in one year on mathematics tests and 26 faster on reading tests than those in classrooms with the least amount of natural daylight. Evidence-Based Educational Interventions

This paper provides an overview of evidence-based educational interventions (EBEIs) and associated practices in school psychology. The profession has, for some time, embraced scientific principles and procedures across areas of professional practice, including diagnosis and classification, assessment, prevention and intervention, consultation, and research and program evaluation. More recently, the profession has embraced evidence-based prevention and intervention practices, intending to implement them in schools. However, doing so requires addressing multiple scientific and practice agendas, including preservice and in-service professional development, systemic school change to promote prevention and intervention program implementation, comprehensive models of mental health and educational services, and the sustainability of evidence-based practices. Five issues need to be addressed for significant progress to occur in the evidence-based practice movement: (a) practiceu2013research networks should be developed in school psychology; (b) intervention research methodology must be expanded to take into account practice contexts of EBEI implementation; (c) practice guidelines could be developed to facilitate implementation of EBEIs in practice settings; (d) professional development opportunities must be created for practitioners, graduate faculty, and researchers; and (e) collaborative partnerships must occur across the diverse groups involved in the EBEI movement, especially those involved in generating the scientific database of EBEIs. Consideration of the scientific basis of school psychology interventions and practices is important because schools are the largest provider of child mental health services. Furthermore, growing evidence shows a reciprocal relationship between academic problems and disabilities and mental health problems. Thus, a scientific basis for school psychology prevention, intervention, and related practices seems essential to the promotion of studentsu2019 academic success and mental health. Following developments in evidence-based medicine, clinical psychologists developed a task force to review u201cempirically validatedu201d treatments for child and adult mental health problems. The scientific foundation of school psychology can be evaluated by examining practices in both graduate training programs and the practice of psychology in schools. Graduate Programs We surveyed graduate programs in school psychology to determine what they are teaching about EBEIs, to investigate their integration of EBEI training, and to understand any barriers to such training. Results of survey indicated: - A relatively low percentage of school psychology graduate training directors were familiar with the EBEIs included in the survey. When averaging across all interventions listed, 29% of directors reported being u201cnot familiar,u201d 30% reported being u201csomewhat familiar,u201d and 41% reported being u201cfamiliaru201d with the EBEIs. - Exposure to the EBEIs occurred more frequently in coursework than in practice experience. When averaging across all EBEIs, 41% of directors reported that graduate students received u201cno exposure,u201d 39% reported students received u201cexposure,u201d and 30% reported students received u201cexperienceu201d with the EBEIs listed. - Lack of time was rated the most serious challenge to EBEI training. - A high percentage of training directors reported that students were taught to apply the criteria developed by professional organizations in psychology and education when evaluating intervention outcome research. A number of interventions considered evidence based by the training directors fell outside the EBEIs incorporated in the survey. Some of these interventions have a weak evidence base. No formal requirement within school psychology training programs mandates teaching EBEIs, but the commitment to include scientifically supportable interventions in the curriculum will probably grow. Moreover, a number of graduate training programs embrace a scientistu2013practitioner model and are the most likely to embrace an evidence-based practice framework in future graduate training. Evidence-Based Practices In Schools Several recent surveys of evidence-based practices in schools do not paint a very positive picture. A study of the prevalence of substance abuse curricula in U.S. schools showed that many middle schools continue to implement curricula that are either untested or ineffective. Another study investigated school psychologistsu2019 use of research in practice and the barriers to using research. Knowledge of effective intervention strategies and their use were closely matched, and respondents indicated they would like to use the strategies with greater frequency. Limited time was the top barrier to the use of all strategies. However, for cognitive behavior strategies and social skills training, practitioner training and the ability to adapt interventions to the school setting were significant factors limiting use; lack of support was indicated as a significant barrier to consulting with teachers, suggesting that some systemic support issues may be important. Professional Standards And Influences On Practice No formal requirements have made knowledge and use of EBEIs and practice guidelines prerequisites of licensure and credentialing. The major professional groups involved in licensure and credentialing currently do not mandate this level of practice, and national school psychology organizations do not mandate EBEI training as part of graduate program accreditation. Many textbooks used in graduate school psychology programs and publications of the National Association of School Psychologists promote a scientific perspective. Psychology Practice Four strategies may promote EBEIs: 1. Develop a practiceu2013research network in school psychology. 2. Promote an expanded methodology for evidence-based practice that takes into account EBEIs in practice contexts. 3. Establish guidelines that school psychology practitioners can use in implementing and evaluating EBEIs in practice. 4. Create professional development opportunities for practitioners, researchers, and trainers. Forge partnerships with other professional groups involved in the EBEI movement. The purpose of the strategies is to establish a link between research and practice that will help us better understand the effectiveness of interventions and promote their adoption and sustainability. Parents and community members now sit on site-based decision-making committees that determine curricular materials, budgetary expenditures, staffing, building usage and scheduling, discipline procedures, professional development for staff, school programs, and technology utilization. As leaders for change, we have learned that revamping systems, policies, and structures invigorates the community and encourages change in practice at the school level. In addition, our responsive learning culture attracts and develops new parent and community leaders who can carry on the work of articulating and leading change processes. Our hope for continuing improvement in student achievement rests in the belief that engaging the voices of parents, community members, teachers, and students will ensure that this generation of learners meets the high standards that will carry them successfully into the twenty-first century. Successful, high-performing schools have specific and identifiable traits that contribute to their success. Common among these are high standards, sufficient staff supported by meaningful professional development, adequate resources, and community and parent involvement. So, if we know what makes a school successful, why do some schools have all these things, while others do not? The answer is: Leadership. Time-honored leadership is needed in many spaces of public life u2013 and most especially in our public schools. While I am not a scholar of leadership, I have learned what a good leader is like. Effective leaders in the public school setting u2013 including parents u2013 are risk-takers. To those of us struggling to garner support for and improve the public schools, these persistent risk-takers are nothing short of refreshing. Where civic engagement around public schools is happening, more often than not communities are being galvanized because of risk-taking leaders willing to stand up for public education. This means more than just standing up against the status quo; it means offering a new vision u2013 and a new path u2013 for better schools. The evolution of leadership roles in corporate America offers some interesting and promising lessons for public school advocates. One study conducted in the early eighties approached leadership from the perspective of u201cfollowersu201d rather than the leaders themselves. The premise was that if you could figure out why people followed certain leaders, then you could teach those leadership qualities to others. I believe these attributes and tactics are applicable to public school advocates, be they parents, civic leaders, or educators themselves. There are five steps leaders must undertake. We also encourage district leadership, school board members, principals, and teachers to adopt a mindset of leadership to effect change in the schools. Here are some suggestions that might help you describe existing school and community characteristics related to academic achievement: - Describe academic programs in your school, using available test scores, grade distributions, course selection booklets, and class enrollments to make your points. - Describe the kinds of community activities that already support academic achievement in your school. - Define how community engagement might strengthen your existing school improvement plan. - Such a definition is crucial for understanding the schoolu2019s relationship to various parts of the community, for determining potential partners, and for developing strategies to reach out to the various school stakeholders. An inventory or a "map" of the community resources needs to be developed. Once this map has been established, it can be beneficial for two different purposes: to determine areas of opportunity and need and to move to action once a need or goal is identified. The inventory defines six different kinds of assets: individual, institutional, federal and state, organizational, physical, and cultural. Use this list to help you draw up a list of these assets for your community. Then you can begin a discussion of how they can be used to bolster academic achievement and how the school can help build the communityu2019s assets. Many of the individuals and organizations listed, as well as the physical assets, can be incorporated into curricular and extracurricular activities. Your community may have additional assets not mentioned here. Also, put yourselves in the shoes of students. Hop on a school bus and follow the daily route, stopping at all of the stops.
