In a piston engine, a piston rod joins a piston to the crosshead and thus to the connecting rod that drives the driving wheels. Engines with crossheads have piston rods. These include some steam locomotives and some large marine engines. Piston rods are usually attached to the crosshead and the piston by a transverse slot and a tapered key. Driving this key sideways tightens the attachment. A Rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener. Before installation, a rivet comprises a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. To make a clear cut distinction between the two ends of the rivet, the original head is called the factory head and the deformed end is called the shop head or buck-tail. The cold-forged and miniature rivets are used in retainers of deep groove ball bearings as well as in a variety of other electrical, engineering applications. A high degree of quality is maintained through a systematic inspection of raw materials, regular machinery repairs, and in-process checks.
