Overview • Background • Location • Number of students • Number of teachers Issues • Staffroom politic • Sensitive issues: Racism, Religion • Gossiping • bad-mouthing • How did we respond to the issue • Conclusion
Background of the school • Location: PersiaranDutamas, Jalan Duta • Number of students: About 600 students • Number of teachers: About 70 teachers
Description of the TOPIC • Problems in the staffroom such as gossiping teachers, staffroom politics, racism, get rich schemes and various other issues. Discussion will include the ways we respond to the problems and stating those who are involved in the issues.
Staffroom politic • Bad-mouthing • A teacher bad-mouthed other teachers • Cursing other teacher • Eg: She is evil, stupid, monster, Mickey Mouse and Pluto(offending remark) • Try to influence practicum teachers (to take side and hate certain teachers) • Disagree with each other and show it • (showing tantrum, launching cold war-affect emotional stress)
Sensitive issues: Racism, Religion • A teacher talked bad about other religions and races. • That teacher expressed dissatisfaction towards certain races and religions. • taboos (what certain religion can and can’t eat ) • rules and regulations (dressing style, religious teaching) • privileges (between races)
Gossiping • Common issues exist in the staffroom (every day things, whining about students) • Disturbing others (one way gossiping) causing uneasiness in the other party. • Effect: Tainting the professionalism of teaching : Noisy staffroom : Neglecting the lesson : Tardiness : Disrespect other colleagues
Gossiping • Dirty jokes in staffroom • inappropriate place • Eg: If students happen to be there: give bad impression to teachers • Cause uneasiness to other teachers
How did we respond? • Went along with the flow (nodding and smiling) • Responded politely (giving opinion in proper way) • Retorted (lose our cool snapped) • Escapism and avoidance (giving excuses, escaped to other places) • Express discomfort to senior teachers
. . . .
Conclusion • The black dots may seem prominent. • But, if you look closely, you will notice that the white area takes larger space as compared to the black dots. • In other words, we should focus more on the positive things around us, and disregard/ overlook the negative/ bad things.
