Advance Planning • It is a requirement under SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) that all recreational craft that go to sea must consider the following items: • Weather forecast • Tidal information • Capability of boat and crew on board • Planned route utilising charts and pilotage information as required

Advance Planning (cont) • At the earliest stages of deciding to go on a voyage it is necessary to: • Decide on your destination, with an alternative location, weather and sea conditions • Consult the appropriate sea chart and seek local knowledge • Establish from the sea chart the maximum depth and profile of the dive site and any navigational hazards • Consult tide tables

Pre-departure Planning • Weather forecast for the area. • Contact Harbour Master. • Engine checks • oil levels, coolant and fuel reserves. • Brief crew on all emergency procedures. • Contact the Irish Coast Guard (Traffic Route) • Dive Log • Stowage and use of personal safety equipment • PFD, First Aid Kit, O2 kit, diving cylinders and emergency plan

  6. Pre-departure Planning (cont) • Emergency plan is carried on board and that all crew are familiar with it. • Plan of the boat showing locations of emergency equipment should posted in a prominent manner. • Nominate First Aider and introduced to crew. • Ensure Dive Flag (“A” Flag) is onboard.

Launching and Briefing • The Coxswain should provide an intensive briefing regarding the following: • Location of First aid kit, O2 kit and emergency plan and equipment • Procedures for the recovery of a Man Overboard (MOB) • Fire fighting equipment • Procedures and operations of communications

  8. Launching and Briefing (cont) • Location of Navigation and other light switches • Method of starting, stopping and controlling the main engine • Method of navigating to a suitable place of safety • Safety cards considered an acceptable way of providing the above information

Operation of the boat at Sea • PFD should be worn in addition to wet/dry suits • Ensure that the boat is suitable for the number of persons and gear - Do NOT overload. • Ensure that pontoons of your RIB are at the correct pressure • All cylinders and equipment is correctly secured. • Coxswain to wear engine kill cord

Operation of the boat at Sea • Ensure suitable attire for the conditions • sunscreen, hats and windcheaters • Appoint lookouts • Observe speed limits • Be aware of any wash from boat • Know your limits • Know the boats limits • Know the navigational hazards • Check fuel reserves regularly • Ensure that the occupants are comfortable and holding on

  11. Post Voyage tasks • Notify the Irish Coast Guard • Tie off boat securely and unload all equipment • Report damages or breakages • Complete Dive Log Record and return to Diving Officer • Refuel or record fuel, oil and coolant levels and notify next divers • Return boat to mooring or retrieve to trailer • Rinse boat/engine and trailer in fresh water
