  1. Becoming Like Jesus Through Evangelism Matthew 13:18-23 Page 1517.

  2. Looking Back: We become more like Jesus as we are involved in Discipleship Worship Ministry Evangelism Fellowship Thinking of these things, and doing them, has helped me …

  3. In This Sermon: Becoming Like Jesus Through Evangelism. Evangelism was a focus for Jesus. Following Jesus involves sharing the good news.

  4. Definition: (εὔ = "good", ἀγγέλλω = "I bring a message"; the word angel is of the same root) and later "good news". Evangelism is bringing the good news of what God has done to restore relationships that have been broken by sin. It is the news that we can be in a right relationship with God.

  5. Questions: Who has room to grow in the area of evangelism? Why is it necessary that we become purposeful in evangelism? Why is motive so important?

  6. Following Jesus: Matthew 4:17 Page 1500 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” Luke 19:10 Page 1631 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”

  7. Avoid the Assumptions. That people know already. That people are too good or too bad for the invitation. That they go to church so they have been taught about salvation.

  8. An Example

  9. God Focused Evangelism: 1. Spreads the seed. 2. Makes the message understandable. 1 Corinthians 3:6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.

  10. Matthew 13:18-23 on page 1517. MT 13:18 "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

  11. Matthew 13:18-23 on page 1517. 20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

  12. Matthew 13:18-23 on page 1517. 22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

  13. Matthew 13:18-23 on page 1517. 23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

  14. Matthew 13:18-23 on page 1517. MT 13:18 "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

  15. Matthew 13:18-23 on page 1517. 20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

  16. Matthew 13:18-23 on page 1517. 22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

  17. Matthew 13:18-23 on page 1517. 23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

  18. God Focused Evangelism: 1. Spreads the seed. 2. Makes the message understandable. Question: What farmer would knowingly spread the seed in any place that was not good soil?

  19. Questions: Who will be able to thank you for making the introduction between God and them? Who would you like sitting next to you next week? Who has God uniquely prepared you to reach?

  20. A Better Question: Do not just ask people if they would like to come to church – ask them if they would like help in getting to know God!

  21. How do you share the Good News? Evangelism is for everyone who follows Jesus because we have good news to share and a world that needs to hear and understand. Not a campaign but a lifestyle. People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.

  22. What is Your Motivation? LOVE – of God and of People.

  23. 2 Peter 3:9 Page 1896 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

  24. But I Have Fears! Put away your concerns with some preparedness but take the step and ask the question “would you like some help getting to know God?” People will say “No” or “Not Yet” but some people are ready to say “Yes” … How will you know if you do not ask?

  25. Take Up The Challenge: How were you introduced to Jesus? Make the invitation into your life, your home, your small group, and our worship service.

  26. Next Week: Becoming Like Jesus Through Fellowship.
