  2. 10 Minute Math • Think about math at a different time of the day. • Today’s Number: • The teacher picks a number. • Find as many ways as you can to make it. 18 + 11 = 29 2 + 27 = 29 (6 x 5) – 1 = 29 3 + 26 = 29 28 + 1 = 29 (8 x 3) = 24 1 x 29 = 29

  3. 10 Minute Math • Students more comfortable sharing. • Students learn new ways to complete a problem from peers. “Make 29 with coins” 29 pennies 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 $1 - + + + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 25 25 25

  4. “Make 29 with coins” 29 pennies 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 $1 - + + + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 25 25 25 10 Minute Math • You can use 10 Minute Math strategies for posters to post in the classroom.

  5. 10 Minute Math: Quick Images • 2 – 3 seconds for Quick Image on overhead • Forces students to chunk information • Show it to students 2 – 3 times 2 + 4 + 2 (3 + 3) + 2 6 + 1 + 1 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1

  6. 10 Minute Math: Quick Images • Subatizing = visually grouped/ organized together • Associative property= doesn’t matter what order (3 x 3) x 4 (18 + 18) (3 x 4) x 3

  7. 10 Minute Math: Add & Subtract Multiples of 10 • Review: What does “6 tens” mean? (with pictures & discussion) “What can you tell me about 363?” 3 hundreds, 6 tens, 3 ones Multiple of 3 Odd Not close to 1,000 36 tens, 3 ones 865 + 20 = 865 + 50 =

  8. 10 Minute Math: Add & Subtract Multiples of 10 865 + 20 = 865 + 50 = 800 Questions to ask: • What does “6 tens” mean? • What happens when you have 10 tens?

  9. 10 Minute Math: Make it Real 38,459 + 50 = (38,000 people at a ballpark … 50 people came in. Would you notice?) 38,459 + 5,000 = (38,000 people at a ballpark … 5,000 people randomly came in different doors. Would you notice? Big impact or no?) 38,459 + 15,000 = big impact!!! Students ask themselves to check answer: • Visualize number with something real. (Put the problem in context.) • Is the answer reasonable?

  10. 10 Minute Math: Make it Real • 142 in dimes and pennies • DP • 14 2
